Oriximiná Regional Hospital warns about the risk of domestic accidents with children
The unit attends to cases of pediatric orthopedic trauma and reinforces the need for prevention in the home environment

The Oriximiná Menino Jesus Regional Hospital (HRMJ), in western Pará, has issued a warning about the risks of domestic accidents involving children. In recent days, the unit — a reference in adult and pediatric orthopedics — has recorded cases of orthopedic trauma in minors, most resulting from falls and accidents at home.
One of the recent cases was that of little Erick Mendes da Silva, 4 years old, a resident of the municipality of Prainha. He suffered a severe fracture in his arm after an accident while playing near a motorcycle.
“The footpeg gave way and the motorcycle tipped over on him. His arm was fractured in three parts,” reported the child's mother, Lana Mendes dos Santos. Rushed to the hospital, Erick underwent surgery and is in stable recovery.
According to orthopedic surgeon Alan Mello, accidents of this type are more common than one might think. “We treat cases of children who have fallen from trees, slipped, or fallen from heights. These are traumas that mainly affect the upper limbs,” he explained.

The doctor warns that quick interventions are essential: “In the most recent cases, if we hadn’t performed the surgery in time, there was a risk of losing the affected limb.”
Alan also emphasizes the importance of not manipulating the injured area without medical guidance. “When there is a fracture, the bone can form sharp ends and displace. It is important to immobilize correctly and seek immediate care at a health unit,” he recommended.
To prevent such occurrences, the orthopedic surgeon advises parents to increase their attention to their children at home. “Observing children's behavior, identifying potential risks in the environment, and acting preventively is essential to avoid accidents,” he highlighted.
The hospital's general director, Katiuscya Braga, emphasized that the hospital has been acting swiftly to address cases of pediatric trauma. “We are a regional reference in orthopedics and can respond quickly to the demands of nearby municipalities, ensuring specialized care in a timely manner,” she stated.
