Book Amazon and Global Socio-Environmental Issues to be Launched in Lisbon, Portugal
The work results from the I International Seminar Continental Connections and features reflections from researchers at Uepa, among other Brazilian and foreign institutions
The Official Residence of the Brazilian Ambassador in Lisbon will host, today, May 29, the launch of the book Continental Connections Portugal-Brazil: Amazon and Global Socio-Environmental Issues. The work is the result of the I International Seminar, held in April 2024 in the Portuguese capital, and brings together reflections from researchers from Brazil, Portugal, and the United States on the centrality of the Amazon in the climate and socio-environmental discussions of our time.
Organized by Kátia Maria dos Santos Melo (Uepa), Maria Inês Amaro (ISCTE), Anderson Maia (Uepa), and other prominent names, the book comprises 16 chapters articulated around four thematic axes: global socio-environmental crisis, human rights, education in the Pan-Amazon, and public policies aimed at bioeconomy and health. With a transdisciplinary and engaged proposal, the work articulates science, art, politics, and traditional knowledge in an unprecedented intercultural dialogue.
The initiative was born during Professor Kátia Melo's post-doctoral internship in Lisbon, Portugal, and was made possible thanks to the support of various institutions, including the University of the State of Pará (Uepa), the Official Press of the State of Pará (Ioepa), the Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon, and the Research and Studies Center in Sociology of the University Institute of Lisbon (CIES-ISCTE).
The launch event will feature a cocktail and the presence of Ambassador Raimundo Carreiro, author of the book's preface. "It was a collective, artisanal construction that started from recorded speeches during the seminar and transformed into chapters with the active participation of all authors," explains Kátia Melo. The project also received support through a parliamentary amendment allocated by Deputy Dirceu Ten Caten (PT), enabling printing by the Dalcídio Jurandir Public Publisher.
Among the authors are renowned researchers such as Maria Lúcia Pinto Leal (UnB), Marcos Montysuma (UFSC), João Moreno Dianumion Wanano, Vanilson Fernandes (Cesupa), and Paulo C. Chagas (University of California), as well as faculty from Uepa, UFPA, UFSC, Unesp, and international institutions.
The book launch will take place starting at 5 PM (local time) at Avenida das Descobertas, No. 1, in Lisbon. The expectation is that the work will strengthen research and mobilization networks around COP 30, scheduled to take place in November this year in Belém, and contribute with critical proposals in defense of climate justice and the peoples of the Amazon.
