State Emergency Room holds a campaign for pediatric surgeries and decentralizes assistance
The initiative accelerates the growing elective surgical demand of the population using the Unified Health System (SUS) in the capital of Pará, Belém

To reaffirm the commitment to the health of young people in Pará, the Government of Pará started on the morning of this Saturday (31), at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM), a campaign for elective pediatric surgeries, accelerating the growing surgical demand of the population using the Unified Health System (SUS).
“These are minor surgeries such as prostatectomy - circumcision surgery; inguinal and umbilical hernias; and surgeries for testicle fixation, orchidopexy, a surgery to correct cryptorchidism, that is, a problem where the testicles did not descend into the scrotal sac during fetal development. They are simple surgeries, but extremely necessary. Orchidopexy, for example, repositions the testicles in the scrotum and fixes them, ensuring they are in the correct place, preventing future problems such as infertility or increased risk of testicular cancer,” explains pediatric surgeon, Alfredo Abud.

According to the specialist, these are minor surgeries where the child has a short hospitalization time, around 12 hours. “These are invasive procedures, with all pre-operative preparation. The patient is admitted, the procedure is performed, and at the end of the day, the patient is discharged,” explains the doctor.
For the continuation of this campaign, the surgery schedule at PSRM has the capacity to perform up to six procedures in the same day. “That is, six children will benefit, and this decentralizes the demands in state public health. So, the Emergency Room increases the opportunities for assistance to the pediatric population,” emphasizes the doctor.

To access the pediatric elective surgery service, SUS users undergo screening and are then referred to the emergency hospital. Once at the hospital, they are admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Care for consultation with a pediatrician. “After medical evaluation, if there is a need for surgical procedure, the child goes to the pre-operative room, and then is submitted to surgery,” explains Alfredo Abud.
Among those benefiting from the public health service at the opening of the pediatric campaign was 3-year-old Teodoro Gripp, a resident of the municipality of Castanhal, who was the first patient to enter the surgical block this Saturday. His mother, Priscila Gripp, 40, celebrates the speed of the service.
“Teodoro's referral to Belém was very quick. The service at the hospital has been very good since our arrival. I imagined he would be waiting a long time in the referral queue, but no. It was a pleasant surprise. The pre-operative was well conducted, and all the stages my son went through in the service, the professionals were explaining to me,” reports the companion.

General Director of PSRM, Carlos Ribeiro, reinforces the strategic role of the hospital. “The Emergency Room understands that these surgeries are necessary for this specific group of the population, even though it is not a profile of care for the unit. We aim to provide more quality of life for these people.”
Humanization
In a more humanized way to make children emotionally more comfortable for the surgical process, the multiprofessional team at PSRM uses the strategy of taking them from the ward to the Surgical Center in an electronic car.
“This humanization with the ‘little cart’ is sensational, especially for his age, three years, which makes all the difference, because he was a bit scared, of course, he had never been in a surgical block. So, the ‘little cart’ eases the tension. We don’t imagine that public service can have such good service, and really, for him, it made a difference,” celebrates Teodoro's mother, Priscila Gripp.
