The State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability of Pará (Semas) held a strategic meeting with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) on Friday (29) to consolidate partnerships aimed at strengthening the bioeconomy in Pará. The meeting was marked by technical discussions and a field visit to the Animal Production Unit (UPA) Álvaro Adolpho in Belém.
During the meeting, Embrapa, represented by the deputy head of research at Embrapa Eastern Amazon, Fábio Barbieri, presented its main areas of action, highlighting the creation of the Sociobioeconomy Space and the revitalization of the UPA, which will be transformed into a Technological Reference Center. The proposal aims for sustainable intensification with low carbon emissions, integrating agroforestry systems (SAFs) and bioeconomy production chains, such as açaí, cocoa, cassava, and cowpea.
“The teams from Embrapa and Semas work together with the goal of showcasing to the world technologies, innovations, and actions promoting the Amazonian bioeconomy,” emphasized Ana Euler, executive director of Innovation, Business, and Technology Transfer at Embrapa.
Semas highlighted its commitment to strengthening the Bioeconomy Plan (PlanBio) and the Bioeconomy Park, seeking to integrate innovation, science, and technology into the initiatives supported by the secretariat.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the articulation of joint actions to promote sustainable tourism, a strategic vision of PlanBio and an important legacy for the State following the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held this year in the capital of Pará, Belém.
“The partnership with Embrapa represents a strategic advance to consolidate bioeconomy as a vector for sustainable development in Pará. We are uniting science, technology, and traditional knowledge to boost productive chains that generate income, conserve the forest, and strengthen our role as a State,” stated Camille Bemerguy, deputy secretary of Bioeconomy at Semas.
Technical visit: the agenda also included a visit to the Álvaro Adolpho Animal Production Unit farm, aimed at promoting practical and in-depth knowledge about the activities, technologies, and methodologies applied in sustainable animal production, aligned with the best agricultural practices and the principles of bioeconomy. This action integrates the activities of the Realiza Pará project and seeks to bring participants closer to the technological innovations and production processes that have been developed and improved at the unit.
The tourism expert and technician in the Bioeconomy area at Semas, Marcel Assis, highlighted the points of the event. "It was an important moment because we could discuss some of the actions they are developing, which can converge with our bioeconomy actions. We also had the opportunity to see, in practice, how these actions are being implemented. With our technical visit, we were able to assess how these initiatives can converge to contribute to sustainable and low-carbon development, focusing on bioeconomy, especially technological bioeconomy," highlighted the Semas technician.
The partnership between Semas and Embrapa occurs within the scope of the Realiza Pará project, supported by KFW Bank and the Sustainable Amazon Foundation (FAS).
