Sanitation of Ver-o-Peso will bring quality of life to 60 thousand people
Work on the first sewage collection and treatment system in the area is already 56% completed
The construction of the first sewage collection and treatment system in the Ver-o-Peso area, in the Campina neighborhood of Belém, has reached 56% of the work completed. The sanitation of the area, which will benefit around 60 thousand people, is one of the legacies of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 30, which will take place in the capital of Pará in November.
This will be the first time in history that the Ver-o-Peso area - a commercial complex that has been in operation for over 390 years - will receive work aimed at the proper treatment of sanitary sewage from properties and businesses in the region, improving the quality of life for the population living and working in the most well-known setting of Belém.
Self-employed worker Cláudio Silva Cordeiro has been working in Ver-o-Peso for 35 years and highlighted the services being carried out by the State Department of Public Works (Seop). According to him, the work has not disrupted the daily activities of what is considered the largest open-air market in Latin America.
“We thought we would have to leave for the work to happen, but with this model of service at different times, it wasn't necessary. We haven't stopped working for a single day. It was also thought of for those who circulate here, who come to do their shopping. Congratulations, I know the importance of the work and the legacy it will leave for everyone who experiences Ver-o-Peso,” emphasized Cláudio Silva Cordeiro.
The sanitation work in Ver-o-Peso has already included excavation and installation of over 1.2 kilometers of piping for the sewage collection network, backfilling and reinstallation of cobblestones, as well as the construction of 13 inspection wells, popularly known as “manholes.” The area where the services are being executed has received over 1.5 kilometers of asphalt restoration.
“We are making progress on this work that will bring safety and health to those who live and transit in this historic and important area of Belém. This is another step in the extensive sanitation program being carried out by the Government of Pará in the capital, which will provide more quality of life for our population,” emphasized the Secretary of Public Works, Ruy Cabral.
The sewage that will be collected in the Ver-o-Peso area will undergo a process at the Una Sewage Treatment Station (ETE) in Belém, linked to the Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa). The work is the result of a partnership between the Government of Pará and the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Cities and the Federal Savings Bank, with an investment of R$ 12,370,495.44.
