Forum in Belém highlights environmental leadership and presents the State's preparations for COP30
The Pará Forum on Climate Change and Adaptation highlights state policies, national goals, and progress on works for the world conference in Belém

The strengthening of state climate and environmental policies, Brazil's goals in combating climate change, and preparations for COP30 were the main topics on the first day of the 7th edition of the Pará Forum on Climate Change and Adaptation (FPMAC), held this Tuesday (10) in Belém. The event is promoted by the Government of Pará, through the Secretary of Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas).
Created in 2019, the FPMAC has established itself as the main space for collective construction, dialogue, and monitoring of state policies to face climate change. The initiative brings together representatives from the public power, productive sector, academia, civil society, and traditional communities.

"Today we had presentations that addressed the NDCs, highlighting the goals and objectives of Brazil and Pará. These commitments are directly linked to transition policies for a low-carbon economy. We presented what is already under development, how these policies reach the ground level, and what results we have already achieved to advance towards our goals," emphasized the director of Climate Change and Environmental Services of Semas (Dimuc), Indara Aguilar, during the panel Public policies for the climate: land use, forest restoration, and sustainable production.

Among the initiatives, Indara highlighted the State Program for the Recovery of Native Vegetation, a central axis of actions aimed at environmental restoration. "It is essential that all programs are integrated and strengthened, including those that still need to advance, so that we can truly achieve the established goals," she concluded.
COP30: climate leadership and new goals
During the event, the national secretary for Climate Change of the Ministry of the Environment, Aloísio Melo, highlighted the importance of COP30 for Brazil. According to him, the Conference will be an opportunity to present to the world the advances in the environmental agenda and the country's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
"COP30 will be a milestone to show that Brazil is delivering results. It will be the moment to assess the commitments made and present concrete solutions for the decarbonization of the Brazilian economy," he stated.
The new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) presented by Brazil at COP29, held in Azerbaijan, raised the country's climate ambition. The commitment is now to reduce net GHG emissions by between 59% and 67% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. This represents an emissions limit of up to 1.05 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent. The goal surpasses the previous commitment, which aimed for a reduction of between 9% and 29% in the same period. "Brazil is increasing its climate ambition and taking on a leadership role. COP30 will show this," reinforced Aloísio.

Progress on works and legacy for Belém
The preparations for the COP30 were also highlighted at the opening of the Forum. Brenda Maradei, a member of the Conference Organizing Committee, presented the progress of the works and actions aimed at strengthening the city's infrastructure. She also detailed programs such as Capacita COP30, which is training professionals to meet the demands of the event.
"It is an extremely important event for the population, and I had the honor of presenting an overview of the works, the social, educational, and infrastructure legacies that COP30 will leave for Belém. I also detailed the entire process of organizing and holding the Conference," explained Brenda.

Program continues until Wednesday
The FPMAC program continues this Wednesday (11), with the presentation of the new Pará Sem Fogo Program, launched on the last World Environment Day (June 5). The state strategy for preventing and combating forest fires will be detailed by the Secretary of Environment, Climate and Sustainability, Raul Protázio Romão.
In the afternoon, the focus will be on bioeconomy, with the participation of Camille Bemerguy, deputy secretary of Bioeconomy at Semas. She will present the Monitoring Platform for the State Bioeconomy Plan and the Bioeconomy and Innovation Park of the Amazon, fundamental initiatives to strengthen a sustainable and inclusive economy in the region.
