As an event integrated into the June Green campaign, last week, the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate, and Sustainability, through the Directorate of Planning, Education, and Decentralization of Environmental Management (Diored), participated in a beach cleanup action at Marieta beach organized by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). Located in the municipality of Maracanã, in the fluvio-maritime sector of the Pará coastal zone, Marieta beach belongs to the Maracanã Marine Extractive Reserve (Resex) managed by ICMBio.

The June Green campaign promotes mobilization and environmental education activities in commemoration of World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of environmental preservation for a sustainable future. In this context, a cleanup action was carried out to sensitize the public about the issue of marine litter.

"This action was designed to try to reduce the amount of waste that reaches the region's beaches. Recently, there has been an accumulation of many waste items brought in by the tide, which have settled over the months along the slopes. In light of this, we sought support not only from the Federal Government, through ICMBio, but also from the State and Municipal Governments, to work together for this very special place," highlighted Maria Augusta Lima, Head of the Integrated Management Unit of ICMBio Salgado Paraense.

Semas's participation in the event was fundamental for strengthening institutional coordination in the territory, especially in the context of the Resex, considering the shared management of the reserve, in which Semas has representation on the deliberative council, and the implementation of the State Coastal Management Policy, established by State Law No. 9.064/2020 and regulated by State Decree No. 3.835/2024.

"The cleanup action at Marieta beach, integrated into June Green, reinforces the collective commitment to environmental conservation of the Pará coast, uniting public authorities, institutions, and local communities in the protection of the Maracanã Marine Resex. Semas's participation, as a member of the deliberative council, highlights its strategic role in implementing the State Coastal Management Policy. Furthermore, the involvement of students from the Mota and Penha communities strengthens environmental education, turning them into awareness multipliers and ensuring a more sustainable future for the region," emphasized Karline Holanda, Director of Planning, Education, and Decentralization of Environmental Management.

"Semas's presence was of utmost importance to coordinate joint actions, involving different federal entities, and propose partnership projects for the region, seeking greater engagement. The action was very significant, involving more than 100 people, including students from municipal schools, representatives of the municipal public authority, and the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate, and Sustainability. It was extremely beneficial for improving local environmental conditions and, consequently, enhancing the region's biodiversity," said Maria Augusta Lima.

The event was planned by ICMBio and included the participation of Semas, the municipal secretariats of environment and tourism of Maracanã, the Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio), the Brazilian Red Cross, the Pará Military Police, the Association of Users of the Maracanã Marine Resex (Auremar), and students from rural schools in the Mota and Penha communities.

The location is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and is considered a paradise beach, which maintains preserved natural elements and does not receive a large flow of tourists. The state of Pará is a route for sea turtles, and Marieta beach is one of the restricted locations used by the species primarily for nesting during the reproductive cycle. Monitoring is carried out by ICMBio with the collaboration of local residents.
