City Park opens its doors to the people of Pará
The largest urban legacy of COP30 will be inaugurated this Friday (27) with cultural programming, a summer camp, and free attractions. The space will remain open throughout the month of July.
The City Park of Belém will be officially opened to the public this Friday (27), offering the people of Pará a new alternative for leisure and socializing. The space will host Brazil's first Public Summer Camp, with free activities for all ages, including sports, culture, and social services. The launch of the programming will be marked by performances from Dona Onete, Arraial do Pavulagem, Zaynara, and Vingadores do Brega. The park will operate until July 31. After that, it will be handed over to the Federal Government for the setup of the structure for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30).

With an area of 500,000 square meters, the City Park is the largest urban intervention in the capital of Pará aimed at COP30. The complex consists of 14 environments dedicated to sports and recreational activities, many of which feature sustainable solutions, such as the children's playground with a surface made from recycled tires.
The final project includes the Aviation Museum, a Creative Economy Center, bike paths, eco-trails, preserved green areas, a lake, and sports facilities aimed at promoting quality of life, leisure, culture, art, and well-being. In total, about 2,500 trees have been planted or transplanted.
The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, emphasized that the park belongs to the people of Pará and reinforced the importance of the space as one of the legacies of COP30. "In addition to its strategic role in the conference, the park offers leisure, culture, and sports for the entire population. Children, teenagers, and adults will be able to have fun and enjoy the place, especially the residents of Sacramenta, Pedreira, and neighboring neighborhoods, who will have a community space close to home," he stated.

The construction of the park is a partnership between the Government of Pará and the company Vale, as part of the Estrutura Pará program. The company's president, Gustavo Pimenta, celebrated the delivery of the first phase of the park. "For Vale, it is a pride to be a partner in this initiative, which will leave a legacy for the society of Pará and reinforces our commitment to the development of Pará, where we have been present for 40 years," he said.

Technology and comfort
The urban furniture of the City Park was designed to promote well-being and safety for visitors. In total, 300 thermal benches made of high-performance reinforced concrete, with thermal insulation and water-repellent treatment, have been installed. The technology keeps the surface pleasant to the touch even on the hottest days - an innovation designed especially for the Amazonian climate.
Another highlight is the water-repellent treatment applied to the seats, which prevents water penetration and facilitates rainwater drainage, keeping the benches dry and suitable for daily use. "This material is suitable for withstanding the Amazonian climate and requires little maintenance, which represents a sustainable and economical option for the park," explains Rodolfo Castro, director of Projects at Secult.

Tree planting and sustainability
The park incorporated advanced climate mitigation technologies, such as the use of photovoltaic solar energy - a renewable and clean source of electricity obtained by converting sunlight into electricity - and rainwater harvesting and reuse systems. Additionally, there has been a significant expansion of green areas, with the planting and transplanting of 2,500 trees, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and climate adaptation in urban settings.
Among the species are samaumeira, rubber tree, mamorana, ipê, açaizeiro, bacabeira, pupunheira, and endangered species such as cedar, mahogany, and acapu. The landscaping also includes 190,000 ornamental plants and 83,000 square meters of grassed areas.
The wetlands, known as "filter gardens," use plants to purify water, reducing environmental impacts in an economical and effective way. In the City Park, two vertical filtration systems with aeration will have the capacity to treat between 22 and 118 cubic meters (m³) of effluents per day, sufficient to serve up to 2,800 people. In addition to efficiency, the technology requires little maintenance and does not generate chemical waste, making it a sustainable long-term solution.
