The Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará - Dr. Geraldo Veloso (HRSP), in Marabá, reached, on June 17, the mark of 50 thousand hemodialysis sessions, performed since the implementation of the service in 2019. A nephrological reference, the unit offers specialized and humanized care to patients with chronic kidney diseases.

The hemodialysis service was the first of its kind delivered by Governor Helder Barbalho, as part of the state strategy for decentralizing nephrological assistance. Since then, the Government of Pará has been expanding access to treatment, providing more comfort, safety, and dignity to users of the Unified Health System (SUS).

The head of the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), Ivete Gadelha Vaz, highlighted the positive impact of the decentralization of the service. “Reaching 50 thousand sessions in Marabá is concrete proof that the interiorization of health in Pará is working. It represents thousands of lives assisted with dignity, comfort, and resolution,” she stated.

Stories of Marias who transform fear into hope for better days
Among the thousands of lives transformed by the service, two patients stood out not only for their common name but for the strength with which they face the treatment routine. Maria Oneide Silva Lima, 62, and Maria Francisca de Sousa, 60, residents of Goianésia do Pará, have been undergoing hemodialysis at the hospital for two years.

“I am well treated, with respect and attention from the entire team. I was afraid of the treatment, I didn’t know what it would be like to be connected to the machine for so many hours. Over time, I got used to it and found a lot of support. Today I feel safe, welcomed, and grateful. This place has become an extension of my home, and the people here, a new family,” says Maria Oneide.

Maria Francisca highlights the constant care she receives from the team. “Thanks to the treatment, I have been living a peaceful life, knowing that I am being cared for by professionals who truly care about my well-being. Hemodialysis is difficult, but I feel supported, and that makes all the difference,” she adds.

Comprehensive assistance and free treatment
The Renal Replacement Therapy Center of the unit offers 100% free treatment through SUS and serves patients from all over the southeast region of Pará. The structure includes an outpatient clinic, observation rooms, and a dialysis room with 20 chairs, operating in three daily shifts, from Monday to Saturday.

“Hemodialysis treatment is continuous, requires discipline, structure, and, above all, empathy. Our work goes beyond technique; we care for people who place their hope for a better life in us,” emphasizes nephrology nurse Ana Carolini.

Ana Carolini adds that the bond between the team and patients is essential. “We know each story, each look. Knowing that we can make a difference in their lives motivates us every day. It’s not just about treating the disease; it’s about caring for the human being in its entirety,” she concludes.

For the hospital's executive director, Flávio Marconsini, the mark of 50 thousand sessions is more than just a number. “It reflects a commitment to public health and life. Each session performed is a renewed chance for our patients to move forward with dignity, and this is only possible thanks to the daily efforts of a highly skilled and sensitive team,” he concludes.

Profile of the health unit: Services at the Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará are 100% through the Unified Health System (SUS). The unit has 135 beds: 97 for clinical hospitalization and 38 in Intensive Care Units (ICU) - Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal.
