Teams from the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity of the State of Pará (Ideflor-Bio) carried out night monitoring actions on Friday (11) in the vicinity of the Atalaia Natural Monument, in Salinópolis, northeastern Pará, with the aim of curbing environmental crimes and ensuring the preservation of wildlife. The activities took place in the area of Atalaia Beach, specifically in the region known as Ponta da Sofia, considered the main nesting zone for sea turtles in the municipality.

The operation focused on monitoring illegal parking and inhibiting the circulation of motor vehicles on the beach sand strip. This work is essential to protect the nests and hatchlings of turtles, which come ashore at night for reproduction. The passage of cars in the area poses a direct threat to these animals, potentially destroying nests, compacting the sand, and hindering the birth and movement of hatchlings to the sea.

With the support of the Environmental Police Battalion (BPA) and other public security forces, the action resulted in the approach of vehicles and guidance to beachgoers and drivers about the risks to local biodiversity. The integrated work reinforces the guidelines of Operation Summer 2025, which aims to reconcile the tourist use of Pará's beaches with environmental conservation.

According to the director of Management and Monitoring of Conservation Units at Ideflor-Bio, Ellivelton Carvalho, the monitoring effort has been constant, especially during periods of higher visitor flow. “The protection of Ponta da Sofia is an absolute priority. Each sea turtle nest represents a fundamental link in the ecological chain, and it is our duty to ensure that these animals complete their reproductive cycle safely,” said the manager.

About the UC - The Atalaia Natural Monument is a Conservation Unit (UC) of Integral Protection and plays an essential role in preserving sensitive coastal ecosystems, such as dunes, restinga, and marine wildlife nesting areas. The monitoring actions not only contribute to compliance with environmental regulations but also raise awareness among visitors about the importance of sustainable practices.

Ideflor-Bio reinforces that the circulation of motor vehicles from the 3rd access shortcut to Atalaia Beach is prohibited by recommendation of the Public Ministry of the State of Pará (MPPA) and ratified by the Court of Justice of the State of Pará (TJPA). Those responsible for infractions are subject to administrative and criminal penalties. During the period of Operation Summer 2025, new monitoring and inspection actions are planned, always focusing on the protection of UCs and threatened species that inhabit the Pará coastline.
