State invests in the expansion of comprehensive women's health at Hospital Abelardo Santos
Unit in Icoaraci guarantees consultations, exams, surgeries, and outpatient services to women from Pará

In Belém, the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) also provides comprehensive women's health through the tripod: consultations, exams, and surgeries. Initiated in the outpatient clinic, the patient-centered service is a priority of the Government of Pará.
“The care begins in the outpatient clinic where we perform a triage to assess the real need for surgery or not. If surgery is necessary, the pre-operative is requested, and the gynecologist indicates the appropriate surgical procedure,” explains gynecologist and obstetrician Luiz Cotta, coordinator of gynecology and obstetrics at HRAS.

As a reference in women's gynecological surgery care, HRAS offers a range of procedures such as: vaginal surgeries; abdominal surgeries; hysterectomy, which is a surgery for the removal of the uterus, either partial or total; removal of the ovary; and perineoplasty surgery. In addition, the female audience has access to emergency obstetric care and exams such as mammography and ultrasound.

Qualified and humanized assistance
The Secretary of State for Public Health, Ivete Vaz, emphasizes the importance of the services provided to women. “Ensuring qualified and humanized assistance to women's health is a commitment of the Government of Pará. Hospital Abelardo Santos has established itself as a reference in this care, offering everything from outpatient care to surgical procedures with excellence. Each number achieved reflects the effort to strengthen a public health network that respects and values the needs of women from Pará,” highlights the manager.
In the first half of 2025, the hospital unit performed 1,159 gynecological consultations in the outpatient clinic, in addition to exams with a highlight on mammography with 1,057 performed. During the same period, 3,367 surgeries were performed, including elective gynecology and urgent and emergency gynecological and obstetric care (GO). In total, 5,583 women benefited from the services.

A resident of the Icoaraci district, Suelaine da Costa, 30 years old, underwent a surgical procedure in gynecology. A user of the Unified Health System (SUS), she was satisfied with the care.
“I arrived at Abelardo Santos about a month ago after being referred by state regulation. I was well attended by the hospital team, the doctor explained the entire surgical process and the importance of this period for my recovery. I have no complaints about this health unit, which is well-structured to support women's health,” said Suelaine.
Service: The unit operates 24 hours a day equipped with five PPP (pre-delivery, delivery, and post-delivery) rooms, and is a reference in care for women and children with a focus on four pediatric fronts: emergency room, surgery, clinical hospitalization, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in addition to welcoming in Intermediate Care Units (ICU).
