State Emergency Room Reinforces Importance of Blood Donation During the Holidays
Campaign held by PSRM in partnership with Hemopa mobilized the community and health professionals in Belém

To ensure the maintenance of blood stocks during the holiday period, the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM), in Belém, held this Wednesday (23) the second blood donation campaign of 2025, in partnership with the Hemopa Foundation. Coordinated by the Humanization Working Group (GTH) of the hospital, the action aimed to mobilize donors and ensure care for patients in urgent and emergency situations.
The campaign brought together hospital staff, companions, visitors, and residents from the neighborhoods surrounding Augusto Montenegro Avenue, where the unit is located, managed by the Acqua Institute in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).
Solidarity and Awareness
Organizational psychologist Beatriz Pessoa was one of the voluntary donors. “We see up close the need of people who need blood to continue living. I was very happy to donate and know that I can help save up to four lives. These campaigns are extremely necessary,” she stated.
Lorene Reis, a social worker from Hemopa, highlighted that in July, due to vacations and travel, donations tend to decrease. “It is at this moment that institutional campaigns gain even more importance. Here at PSRM, we saw a beautiful solidarity chain formed by collaborators, companions, and residents of the region,” she said.
Active Community Participation
Iran Serrão, a resident of the Parque Verde neighborhood and a regular donor for 45 years, also participated in the campaign. “I made a point of getting my donation up to date. It costs nothing to help those in need with such a simple act, but of enormous importance,” he declared.

Jean Silva dos Santos, a patient companion, reinforced the message of solidarity. “Everyone may need blood in hospitals. Donating is a simple, painless gesture that saves lives.”
High Demand and Significant Results
So far this year, PSRM has already performed 2,633 surgical procedures. From January to July 23, the unit also recorded 71,363 attendances in adult and pediatric emergency services, in addition to 3,805 hospitalizations. The campaign resulted in the collection of 123 bags of blood, which can benefit up to 492 patients.

“PSRM consumes, on average, 200 bags of blood per month. With this campaign, we managed to reinforce Hemopa's stocks, especially during this period when donations tend to drop,” highlighted Carlos Vinícius Ribeiro Quadros, the general director of the unit.
