The Government of Pará, through the Agricultural Defense Agency of Pará, Adepará, participated in the symbolic ceremony of delivering the international certificate of foot-and-mouth disease free area without vaccination, by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The celebration is the result of the 92nd General Session of the World Organisation for Animal Health, held in May this year in France, which declared Brazil's international recognition as a foot-and-mouth disease free area without vaccination. The meeting took place on Tuesday (29) at the health department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), in Brasília (DF).

“This certificate puts Pará at another level of production,” highlights the general director of Adepará, Jamir Macedo.

“This certificate puts the State of Pará at another level of production. It is a foot-and-mouth disease free area without vaccination with international recognition. This certification allows for the opening of new markets, enables production development, and reduces costs with vaccination,” said the general director of Adepará, Jamir Macedo.

Status free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination - The withdrawal of the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine marks a new era for production. With the end of immunization, producers need to be more attentive to the health of animals and report to Adepará any suspicion of symptoms suggestive of vesicular disease in animals, such as fever, excessive salivation, sores in the mouth, difficulty eating, limping or walking with difficulty, and lesions on the feet.

“This is a major milestone for the Defense Agency, as it enables the opening of new, more demanding markets, consequently generating jobs and income. We thank everyone involved in this process, employees, producers, unions, partner entities, and private veterinarians,” says the veterinarian and manager of Surveillance for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Vesicular Diseases, and Risk Analysis, Glaucy Carreira.

Agricultural Defense - For 22 years, through the defense and inspection service, Adepará has been advancing in the structuring, development, and promotion of the quality of animal and plant food in the 144 municipalities of the State. Risk-based surveillance actions have been intensified in all regions, aiming to ensure the health of the second largest cattle herd in the country, with 26 million animals.

Another achievement of animal defense in the first half of this year was the adherence to the Brazilian System of Inspection of Livestock Inputs - SISBI-PEC, from Mapa, which recognizes the equivalence of the Inspection and Supervision Service of Livestock Inputs of the Defense Agency. Pará is the 5th state to achieve this adherence. The Brazilian System of Inspection of Livestock Inputs (SISBI-PEC), which is part of the Unified System for Agricultural Health Care (SUASA), standardizes and harmonizes the inspection procedures for livestock inputs to ensure the safety and security of these inputs.

“With the adherence to SISBI-PEC, the Official Veterinary Service of Adepará updates the legal basis for the inspection activity of veterinary products, in accordance with current legislation, strengthening its inspection and supervision actions, ensuring the safety, identity, and quality of these products offered to consumers, especially rural products. The adherence is a national recognition, increases consumer confidence in the safety of products, boosting sales,” commented the director of animal defense and inspection of Adepará, Graziela Oliveira.

The ceremony was attended by employees of Adepará, the general director of the Agency, Jamir Macedo, the director of animal defense and inspection, Graziela Oliveira, the manager of Surveillance for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Vesicular Diseases, and Risk Analysis, Glaucy Carreira, and the veterinarian and state agricultural inspector, Joylson Canto.
