Belém will host, on Tuesday (5), six workshops aimed at the nomination of Theatro da Paz (PA) and Teatro Amazonas (AM) — the Theaters of the Amazon — for the title of UNESCO World Heritage. The activities will take place at the Centro Universitário do Pará (Cesupa), unit AC3, at Avenida Alcindo Cacela, No. 1416, with free admission.

The initiative is part of the collective construction process of the Management Plan for the nomination and aims to mobilize society around the appreciation of these cultural assets. The workshops will cover topics such as heritage education, tourism, conservation, memory, and urban landscape.

On Tuesday, the program will be divided into two shifts. In the morning, from 8:30 AM to 12 PM, three workshops will take place: on heritage education and training; on tourism, creative economy, cultural perception and appropriation, and on performance. In the afternoon, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, three more will be held: on conservation, archives, education and history, and on city, landscape, and the surrounding square complex.

The workshops are open to the public, free of charge, and aimed at all those interested in participating in the process of valuing the Amazonian theaters. Registration must be done via link, access here.

The social listening sessions are coordinated by the superintendencies of the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) in Pará and Amazonas, in partnership with the state and municipal cultural secretariats.

According to the superintendent of Iphan in Pará, Cristina Vasconcelos, listening to the population is essential. "The time has come to listen directly to society. This is the opportunity for every citizen to contribute ideas and feelings on how to preserve Theatro da Paz, this valuable asset that can be recognized worldwide," she states.

In addition to Belém, Manaus (AM) also hosted workshops on July 28 and 29. For the superintendent of Iphan in Amazonas, Beatriz Calheiro, the involvement of society is part of a long-term commitment. "The mobilization for international recognition does not end with the nomination. It is necessary to define how the theaters will be cared for, with responsibilities and deadlines well established," she emphasized.

About the nomination

The technical dossier formalizing the nomination of the Theaters of the Amazon was submitted to UNESCO in January 2025, prepared by Iphan in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the governments of Pará and Amazonas, and the municipalities of Belém and Manaus.

The nomination is currently in the evaluation phase. The next step will be the technical visit from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos), the advisory body of UNESCO, which will conduct on-site inspections of the two nominated theaters.
