Abelardo Santos Hospital Transforms Hospital Routine with Well-Being Actions
As part of humanized care, patients receive haircuts and beard trims aimed at strengthening self-esteem and emotional well-being during treatment

Patients at the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) in Icoaraci, a district of Belém, started the month with a renewed look. The ninth-floor balcony of the unit transformed, this Friday (1st), into a space for care and self-esteem, with free haircuts and beard trims. "I had long hair and this action came at the right time," said Rosivaldo dos Anjos Guedes.
A resident of Tomé Açu, a municipality in Northeast Pará, the 56-year-old self-employed man explained that he could not leave the hospital due to treatment, which made it difficult to maintain his appearance. "When I heard about the initiative, I made sure to be one of the first. In the end, I was very satisfied with all the care and dedication. This makes this delicate moment a little lighter," he added.
Gederson da Silva, 53, also got a haircut and emphasized the importance of actions like this. "Just because we are in treatment doesn't mean we can't take care of ourselves, right?" he joked. For him, such initiatives change the hospital routine and positively contribute to recovery. "We feel more cheerful. It improves our emotional state and, for sure, this helps in the recovery process," he stated.

Vicente Silva, 59, is one of the volunteer hairdressers who has participated in this type of action for 20 years. "I am also a user of the Unified Health System and know closely the benefits and weaknesses of this service. Precisely for this reason, I know how important this type of action is. It does good for those who receive it, but also for those who perform it. Everyone wins," he highlighted.
Humanization
This is just one example of humanized action at the largest public unit of the Government of Pará. This activity is promoted by the Humanization Committee (CH) of HRAS, in partnership with the volunteer project Tesourinha, which brings together seven professionals. The action takes place at least once a month and aims to provide well-being to patients during hospitalization.
According to Leonardo Silva, administrative assistant in the humanization sector of HRAS, offering reception and care is as fundamental as investing in cutting-edge equipment and hospital management systems. "This way, we place users at the center of care, respecting their emotional demands and promoting a more empathetic treatment, which is the great differential of Abelardo Santos Hospital," he explained.
Leonardo states that patients who are welcomed and respected respond better to treatments, show reduced levels of stress and anxiety, and collaborate more with medical guidelines. Additionally, a health team also benefits from humanized practices, as a more harmonious environment reduces professional burnout and improves the organizational climate.
The Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) is a reference in health care for the indigenous population, women, and children. In the pediatric area, the unit operates in four fronts: emergency, surgery, clinical hospitalization, and ICU, in addition to providing care in Intermediate Care Units (UCIn), ensuring specialized care 24 hours a day.
