The commitment and qualification of the Hospital and Transplant Center team were fundamental for the success of the harvesting

Reference in medium and high complexity in northeastern Pará, the Public Regional Hospital of Caetés (HRPC), in the municipality of Capanema, conducted its first organ harvesting on Saturday (9), a milestone for the institution and the public health network in Pará. The action was coordinated by the State Transplant Center of the State Department of Public Health (Sespa) and involved the efforts of the Hospital and Central teams.

Two kidneys and one liver were harvested, which were sent to Belém, where they will be implanted in patients waiting in the single queue of the National Transplant System, following strict technical and legal criteria. The procedure was only possible thanks to the generous gesture of the donor's family, who, in a moment of pain, authorized the donation, allowing other lives to be saved.

The procedure marks the history of the Regional Hospital of Caetés

Transparency and safety - For the HRPC's Care Manager, Eduardo Machado, this moment is one of gratitude and great significance. “We are conducting the first liver and kidney harvesting in the Caetés Region, respecting life and transforming a moment of pain and loss into hope for others. In a humanized manner, the management of the Caetés Hospital Complex ensured that all medical, ethical, and legal protocols were followed, ensuring the quality and viability of the organs, as well as transparency and safety throughout the process. I thank and congratulate the CIHDOTT team, which coordinated with agility and efficiency from the suspicion of brain death to the harvesting, in partnership with CET/Sespa, which was in our unit training our team and, a week later, made this possible,” said the manager.

According to the technical responsible for liver transplantation at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará Foundation (FSCMPA), Rafael Garcia, the first organ harvesting in HRPC's history is extremely important. “First, for the generous gesture of the donor's family, which will allow saving several lives. Second, it shows the importance of continued education for professionals. The State Transplant Center provided training in diagnosing brain death, and the donation occurred in the same week. Third, this donation can serve as encouragement for other families to do the same. Diagnosing brain death, maintaining the donor's viability, and performing the organ extraction surgery are high-complexity procedures, and this shows how HRPC is equipped to serve the population,” emphasized Rafael Garcia.

Nurse Elivaldo Júnior, a member of the Nursing Ethics Committee and representative of the Intra-Hospital Commission for Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation (CIHDOTT), evaluated it as “an honor to participate in this action. We provided full support to the family members, and all those involved were fundamental for this moment to happen, allowing that, through this donation, other people have a new opportunity for life.”

The harvesting followed the protocol established for cases of brain death, which involves confirming the diagnosis through clinical and complementary examinations, communication to the Transplant Center, and activation of the specialized team for the surgical procedure.

Procedures for harvesting – When brain death is confirmed, the State Transplant Center (CET Pará) is notified and provides the necessary support, with materials and a team of specialized professionals to carry out the organ harvesting. For the process to be carried out, it is essential that the family members authorize the donation, which requires a process of sensitization.

The team responsible for the harvesting consisted of nurses Larissa Sena and Aline Carvalho Campos Ribeiro, and surgeons Maisa dos Santos Feitosa and Mariana Pereira Maurity, who traveled to Capanema for the procedure.

Service: The Caetés Hospital Complex is part of the state health network of the Government of Pará, through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), and serves exclusively through the Unified Health System (SUS). The unit is located at Avenida Barão de Capanema, in the Centro neighborhood, in Capanema. More information can be obtained by phone at (91) 3122-7391.
