The Ecofalante Film Festival, recognized as the most important South American event for audiovisual production related to socio-environmental themes, arrives in Belém this week. From August 20 to September 3, 45 films will be screened at Cine Líbero Luxardo and Sesc Ver-O-Peso. All sessions are free of charge.

This is the second consecutive time the Festival has come to the capital of Pará, Belém. This time, nearly 60% of its programming consists of films directed by women. Female participation in national and international cinema includes Pará directors such as Aldira Akay, Beka Munduruku, Rilcélia Akay, and Priscilla Brasil.

The opening of the Festival, on the 20th, exclusive to invited guests, will be marked by the film "There Will Be No More History Without Us," by Pará filmmaker Priscilla Brasil, which denounces the historical process of exploitation of the Amazon rainforest and reveals how racism is organized in the idea of "demographic emptiness."

At Cine Líbero Luxardo, public sessions will take place from August 21 to 27, and at Sesc from August 28 to September 3. More details about the programming can be found on the Festival's website.

Tribute - In this edition, the Ecofalante Pará Festival pays tribute to filmmaker Hermano Penna, celebrating his legacy with the screening of "Fronteira das Almas" and "Sargento Getúlio." Penna was born in Ceará, and his work is characterized by films with themes related, above all, to the North and Northeast of Brazil, such as the issue of indigenous peoples and cangaço.

Great winner of the Rio Cine Festival, where it accumulated awards for best film, direction, screenplay, cinematography, editing, and sound, "Fronteira das Almas" (1987) is based on the agrarian situation of the country, narrating the difficulties faced by a group of farmers in the interior of Rondônia. The cast includes names like Antônio Leite, Suzana Gonçalves, Fernando Bezerra, and Marcélia Cartaxo.

On the other hand, "Sargento Getúlio," considered a classic of Brazilian cinema, is an adaptation of the eponymous book by João Ubaldo Ribeiro that follows Sergeant Getúlio and driver Amaro on their mission to transport a political prisoner from Paulo Afonso (BA) to Aracaju (SE).

During the journey, the political situation changes, and the sergeant receives orders to release the prisoner. Distrustful, he insists on proceeding, which turns him into an enemy of the order. Pursued and feeling betrayed, Getúlio sees the fulfillment of the mission as the only reason for his existence. The cast includes names like Lima Duarte, Fernando Bezerra, Orlando Vieira, and Flávio Porto.

The feature won the best direction award at the Locarno Festival; best film, best actor, best supporting actor, best sound technician, and the critics' award at the Gramado Festival; the Federation of Film Clubs/Unesco Award at the Third World Festival (France); and the special jury prize at the Havana Festival.
