Ideflor-Bio firefighters rescue barn owl in São Geraldo do Araguaia
After the rescue, the team took the owl to a suitable and safe area, where it was released. The action was monitored by the firefighters, who recorded the moment of the bird's freedom.

An unusual action mobilized the team from the Institute of Forest Development and Biodiversity (Ideflor-Bio) in São Geraldo do Araguaia, southeastern Pará, on Monday (18). A barn owl (Tyto furcata) got trapped in the ceiling of a store in the city center and needed to be rescued with the support of the agency's firefighters. The call was made by the store owner, who contacted the team after noticing the animal's situation.
According to the manager of the Araguaia Administrative Region, Laís Mercedes, the firefighters' action was essential to ensure the bird's safety. "We received a request for help to remove this owl that got trapped in the ceiling of a store here in São Geraldo. Our firefighters were on patrol, and we contacted them to go help. They successfully carried out the rescue. Although it is not a direct responsibility of the Institute, this type of action with wild animals, whenever they seek us for help, the firefighters, when they can, carry out this type of support," she explained.
The biologist from Ideflor-Bio, Daiana Amorim, also highlighted the characteristics of the species, popularly known as barn owl or church owl. It is a nocturnal animal that can be seen during the day searching for food or bringing prey to its chicks. The specialist also emphasized the importance of immediate release to reduce the animal's stress and ensure its return to its natural habitat.
After the rescue, the team took the owl to a suitable and safe area, where it was released. The action was monitored by the firefighters, who recorded the moment of the bird's freedom. According to the technicians, the animal showed no injuries and was able to resume its activities normally in the wild.

About the species - The barn owl is a widely distributed species in Brazil and plays an important role in ecological balance, especially in controlling rodent populations. For this reason, its preservation is considered strategic for maintaining biodiversity and also for balance in urban and rural areas.
The rescue drew the attention of the local community and reinforced the importance of integrated action between society and environmental agencies. For Ideflor-Bio, situations like this demonstrate how the support of firefighters goes beyond combating forest fires, also encompassing actions of citizenship and wildlife protection.
