With 85% of the work completed, the viaduct at Avenida Mário Covas with Avenida Independência, in Ananindeua, is in the final construction phase and promises to transform mobility in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. The new viaduct, which will benefit about 30,000 people, will feature four lanes and allow for smoother traffic, facilitating movement between BR-316 and Augusto Montenegro Avenue.

The project also brings an artistic differential: a mural by Jeferson Cardoso, a 44-year-old painter, depicting the Amazonian fauna and flora. With 23 years of career, the artist emphasizes his satisfaction in contributing to the work. “I know my art will bring tranquility to those who pass by here. It’s a work done with care, so that everyone who passes can contemplate the beauty of the Amazonian nature,” he states.

The inspiration for the painting came from the local fauna, highlighting the tufted capuchin monkey and the blue-and-yellow macaw, representative figures of the Amazon. “We were inspired by the diversity of the Amazonian fauna, which is one of the richest in the world,” explains Jeferson.

Emanuele Gaia, the fiscal engineer from the Metropolitan Transport Management Center (NGTM) responsible for the work, emphasizes the positive impact of the art on the project. “We have the freedom to explore the Amazon in various ways, and doing this through the delicacy of art enhances the beauty and legacies that COP30 will leave us.”

Works advance for greater local mobility

The new viaduct promises greater fluidity to the region's traffic. The structure will feature four lanes, with two in the direction of BR-316 and two in the direction of Augusto Montenegro.

Retiree Wyberlon Gester, a resident of Avenida Mário Covas for 37 years, reveals his expectations for the changes in vehicle traffic on the road. “The work brings benefits for those who live here and for those coming from Avenida Independência to the BR. The traffic was chaotic. I am looking forward to the improvements that this viaduct will bring for all of us,” he says.

The work continues with paving, curbing, drainage, and landscaping services. With a length of 350 meters and a width of 14 meters, the viaduct will allow vehicles to pass underneath the structure on Avenida Independência.
