The State Secretariat of Justice (Seju), through the Consumer Protection and Defense Directorate (Procon Pará), carried out an inspection action in hotels in Belém on Wednesday (20), aiming to guide and ensure compliance with consumer rights in the provision of lodging services.

During the action, the Procon team observed whether the establishments complied with regulations such as visible and clear information to customers about daily rates and check-in and check-out times, availability of the Consumer Protection Code in an easily accessible location, registration of the establishment with the Ministry of Tourism, among other items.

Diana Mainieri, manager of analyses and complaints at Procon, explains that the lack of information about prices was one of the main problems encountered.

“Hotels need to clearly express the amounts charged at the moment a person enters the reception, without the consumer needing to access websites or apps.”

Knowledge about the daily rate at different times of the year also serves to analyze whether there is a practice of abusive price increases for lodging. “There were cases where we requested the price of the room for today, during the Círio, and then during the COP 30 period, and they could not provide that information at the time. So this was recorded in the inspection report delivered to the hotel,” says Diana.

Establishments that received the inspection report have a period of 48 hours to respond regarding the points recorded after the Procon inspection. If there is no compliance with the regulations or a plausible defense, the locations may receive a notice of infraction, which could result in a fine.

Right to information - Gareza Moraes, director of Procon Pará, emphasizes that the inspection in hotels is part of a joint action carried out by Seju, the State Attorney General's Office, the State Public Defender's Office, and the State Public Ministry to curb the practice of abusive pricing for lodging during COP 30. “We are checking establishments, providing guidance, and taking measures to reinforce primarily the respect for the consumer's right to obtain clear information about the service.”

Service – In Belém, the Procon headquarters operates from Monday to Thursday, from 8 am to 2 pm, at Rua Municipalidade, No. 1,636, corner with Travessa Soares Carneiro, in the Umarizal neighborhood. There is also service at the Cidadania Station, which operates in the Pátio Belém Shopping, on Travessa Padre Eutíquio, and at the Usinas da Paz in the Icuí and Cabanagem neighborhoods.
