A program commemorating the State Day of Attention to Cleft Lip and Palate - August 6 - was held by the Santa Casa do Pará Foundation on the morning of Sunday (24), at Praça Batista Campos, in Belém. Established in 2018, with the aim of raising awareness in society, disseminating information, and reducing the prejudice associated with cleft lip and palate, the date also provides visibility and encourages support for patients and their families, emphasized the coordinator of the multiprofessional team of the Cleft Clinic at Santa Casa, speech therapist Deborah Costa.

“We managed to bring together patients, families, supporters of the cause, and groups of mothers of cleft-affected children. Many people were able to learn about the service, many were able to understand what a cleft lip and palate is, understand the difficulties that this malformation brings to patients, and were made aware that there is treatment, and that treatment is not only surgical, that these patients also need to have consultations and exams. Today, here in our State, they can receive this comprehensive care at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará,” informed the specialist.

Luiz Augusto and Lana Silva are the parents of Ana Flor, 6 years old, who is receiving treatment at the Santa Casa clinic. Residents of Vigia de Nazaré, a municipality in northeastern Pará, they woke up early to participate in the program, which for them is a way to honor the reference service where their daughter receives excellent multiprofessional care.

“Six years ago, in 2018, we had the surprise of her being born with this cleft. It was difficult for us because it was the first time we dealt with a situation like this. But over time we managed to get a referral to Santa Casa, and since then the operations began. She has already undergone four surgeries, and each surgery is a victory. It is also a suffering; we end up suffering along with the child. But it is a suffering of joy because we are seeing the improvement in her face and the importance of this treatment at Santa Casa. We are very grateful for the attention that Santa Casa offers to everyone who receives treatment there,” said Luiz Augusto.

Reference - In the last three years, the Reference Service for Cleft Lip and Palate has already performed more than 18,000 multiprofessional consultations and surgeries. It currently has 1,377 registered patients who receive qualified and humanized care.

Santa Casa is a state reference in the treatment of cleft lip and palate and children with other craniofacial malformations since 2018, equipped with state-of-the-art structure and equipment for diagnostics and monitoring the quality of life of patients.

The service also has a multiprofessional team, including psychologists, speech therapists, nurses, doctors, and dentists, among other professionals, who provide comprehensive care to cleft-affected patients.
