The Cine Líbero Luxardo, in Belém, begins a new program this Thursday (28), bringing two remarkable premieres for lovers of the seventh art. On one side, the award-winning Brazilian feature film “The Last Blue,” directed by Gabriel Mascavo; on the other, the acclaimed psychological horror “The Hour of Evil,” which has been winning over critics and audiences around the world. Both films will be showing until next Wednesday, the 3rd.

Set in an industrial city in the Amazon, “The Last Blue” tells the story of Tereza, a 77-year-old woman forced by the government to move to a compulsory housing colony for the elderly — a place where old age is segregated in the name of the productivity of youth.

Before her exile, Tereza decides to embark on a journey through the Amazonian rivers and tributaries in search of a final wish. It is on this journey that she encounters the mystical blue snail, a legendary creature whose blue-neon slime is said to reveal the future to anyone who drips it in their eyes.

The film, winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, reaffirms Mascavo's provocative style, which had already made an impact with “Boi Neon” (2015) and “Divine Love” (2019). Here, he satirizes ageism and the excesses of the capitalist system, wrapping social criticism in fantastic elements and hypnotizing visuals. The film touches on themes such as free will, vitality, and the right to age with dignity, all through powerful dialogues and symbolism that invites reflection.

“The Hour of Evil”: the horror of the year hits the screens

The film begins with a disturbing mystery: 17 children from the same classroom disappear simultaneously during the night — all except one. The mass disappearance creates an atmosphere of paranoia and despair in a small community, while desperate attempts to understand what happened reveal increasingly disturbing layers.

With a heavyweight cast that includes Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Austin Abrams, the feature bets on a fragmented, tense, and visually powerful narrative. The bold and original script combines psychological horror, social criticism, and supernatural elements, establishing Cregger as one of the great promises of contemporary horror cinema.

“The Hour of Evil” is also a resounding success with audiences: over $80 million earned at the global box office in just the first days of screening — more than double the production budget. The critical reception is also impressive: 95% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare A- rating on CinemaScore, especially for a film of the genre.
