The Oriximiná Menino Jesus Regional Hospital (HRMJ) performed the first shoulder arthroplasty with a reverse prosthesis in its territory. The high-complexity surgery replaces the worn or fractured shoulder joint with a prosthesis, aiming to relieve pain and restore limb function, marking a milestone for medicine in the Northern Channel.

Patient Ocila Barbosa Marinho, 76 years old, a resident of Óbidos, celebrates the good result. "The surgery was very good, the medical team treated me very well and today I am being discharged to return to my municipality," she said.

Ocila needed the procedure on August 27, after suffering a fall at home and presenting a comminuted fracture in multiple parts of the humeral head. "Before my treatment, I felt a lot of pain in my right shoulder that prevented me from doing things."

A comminuted fracture is when a bone breaks into three or more fragments due to a high-impact force, causing intense pain. The surgery was conducted by orthopedic surgeon Fábio Paixão, the chief shoulder surgeon at HRMJ, together with specialist Roque Sales de Andrade Júnior. After the operation, the patient remained in the ICU under the care of intensivist Mariana Sarmento, progressing with clinical stability to begin rehabilitation.

According to specialist Roque Sales, the technique is considered a significant advancement. "The reverse shoulder prosthesis restores mobility and reduces pain in elderly patients, especially in complex fractures or in cases of extensive rotator cuff injury, situations where other methods do not yield good results."

The hospital, through its technical structure, facilitated the acquisition of the prosthesis material and ensured specialized support in the postoperative period. "I congratulate the entire clinical staff, the nursing team, and the surgical block assistants, whose dedication was essential for the success of this historic milestone," highlighted Roque Sales, coordinator of the Orthopedics Service.

Humanized care and 100% SUS
As a reference in orthopedics and traumatology, the Oriximiná Menino Jesus Regional Hospital has 26 inpatient beds, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and 16 welcoming beds, providing comprehensive and humanized care.

The unit is 100% SUS and has a multidisciplinary team composed of nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition, psychology, and social service professionals, ensuring safe and quality assistance to the population.
