The construction of the Maternal and Child Hospital of Breves, in the Marajó archipelago, has already reached 72% physical completion and 75% financial disbursement. With an investment of over R$ 19.5 million, resulting from an agreement between the Government of Pará and the City Hall of Breves, the unit is expected to be delivered by 2026, expanding the public health network and offering specialized care for mothers and children from Breves and neighboring municipalities such as Anajás, Bagre, Curralinho, Gurupá, Melgaço, and Portel.

The hospital will have the capacity for 30 general hospitalization beds and 10 neonatal ICU beds – including four ICU beds, four UCI beds, and two Kangaroo UCI beds, as well as an isolation area. The unit will also feature 10 PPP (Pre-delivery, Delivery, and Post-delivery) rooms, aligned with the guidelines of the Stork Network, which promotes more humanized care.

The structure will be equipped with four consulting rooms, ultrasound services, electrocardiograms, tomography, and four surgical rooms, ensuring multidisciplinary support for maternal-fetal and neonatal health.

Strengthening SUS in Marajó

The State Secretary of Public Health, Ivete Vaz, highlighted the impact of the construction on the decentralization of assistance.

“This hospital represents the commitment of the Government of Pará to expand the network of specialized assistance for women's and children's health. We are ensuring a modern, safe, and adequate structure that will strengthen care in Marajó and provide quality care closer to the population,” she stated.

Governor Helder Barbalho emphasizes that the investment in the Maternal and Child Hospital of Breves is part of the State's strategy to structure public health in the region, reducing the need for travel to Belém for high-complexity care.

Population's Expectations

Residents of Breves and neighboring cities are eagerly anticipating the delivery of the unit. Babysitter Luciene Medeiros, 24, believes that the hospital “will help many people who are still thinking about having children” and will offer “a good structure.”

Pedagogy student Saynara dos Santos Macedo, 26, recalled the difficulties faced in previous pregnancies and stated that the hospital will be essential for ensuring more adequate treatment. “It will definitely bring much better care for the recovery of many mothers and children,” she said.

Maria Lima, a 21-year-old domestic worker, highlighted the social importance of the project. “We have very high expectations because it is a long-held dream to have a children's hospital unit to welcome both us, mothers and women, and our children,” she stated.

With over 70% completion, the Maternal and Child Hospital of Breves is progressing to become a landmark in maternal and child assistance in Marajó. The initiative by the Government of Pará reinforces the commitment to invest in health infrastructure, expanding access for the population and strengthening the Unified Health System (SUS) in hard-to-reach areas.
