PCT Guamá is the first technology park in the Northern region of Brazil

The Science and Technology Park (PCT) Guamá held, this Wednesday (10), at the Innovation Space auditorium, the launch of the Solid Waste Management Program (PGRS). This strategic initiative aims to promote sustainable practices in compliance with the National Solid Waste Policy, environmental legislation, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.

The program is part of the Operational Plan established between the government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Higher, Professional, and Technological Education (Sectet), and the Guamá Foundation, a science and technology institution (ICT) responsible for managing the complex.

Scheduled for execution between September and December of this year, the PGRS aims to structure an efficient waste management system in the Park, focusing on waste generation reduction, proper segregation, safe storage, and correct final disposal. The methodology includes a detailed diagnosis of the types, volumes, and points of waste generation; training for residents and employees; implementation of structured selective collection; and strengthening partnerships with local cooperatives for recycling.

One of the objectives of the Plan is the significant reduction of waste in the complex

The implementation will be divided into three phases: diagnosis and classification, segregation, and regular and efficient collection. Among the planned actions are characterization and gravimetric analysis; definition of points and collectors by type of waste; conducting training and lectures; reduction in waste generation; shared responsibility; and installation of voluntary delivery points for electronic and recyclable materials.

The program also aims to encourage the reuse of waste, monitor indicators such as generated volume, percentage recycled, and number of trainings conducted, in addition to promoting social engagement and environmental awareness. The expectation is to significantly reduce waste generation in the complex, increase the separation and recycling rate, and stimulate a culture of sustainability among users, strengthening the circular economy and generating positive impacts on surrounding communities.

The PGRS is conducted by the company Soluções Engenharia e Meio Ambiente.

Reference in innovation in the Amazon

PCT Guamá is an initiative of the government of Pará, through Sectet, in partnership with the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (Ufra), managed by the Guamá Foundation.

It is the first technology park in the Northern region of Brazil, aiming to stimulate applied research and innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life of the population.

Located on the banks of the Guamá River, which gives its name to the complex, the PCT is situated between the campuses of the two universities and has a rich biodiversity ecosystem, extending over 72 hectares, designated for buildings and the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Metropolitan Region of Belém.

The complex has more than 30 resident companies (physically installed in the Park), over 40 associates (linked to the Park but not physically installed), twelve research and development laboratories for processes and products, and a technical school.

PCT Guamá is part of the National Association of Entities Promoting Innovative Enterprises (Anprotec) and the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (Iasp), and is part of the largest innovation ecosystem in the world.
