In Augusto Corrêa, Emater's office collaborates for farmers' access to public policies for family farming

The local office of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company of the State of Pará (Emater) in Augusto Corrêa, on the Rio Caeté, is documenting cassava producers in the municipality for immediate access to rural credit.

The goal is that, with the national family farming registration (caf) and the rural environmental registration (car), families from the Trevinho community, at Km 36 of the PA-462 highway, and the surrounding area will receive, still this year, resources from the Acredita line of the Bank of the Amazon (Basa), under individual contracts between R$ 12,000 and R$ 15,000, to sponsor actions such as land clearing and mechanization. The properties range from 10 to 25 hectares, with a good level of forest preservation, according to Emater specialists.

A community effort in the first half of September, with the support of the Municipal Secretary of the Environment (Semma), has already resulted in 10 cars and 14 cafs. “Emater's logic is precisely within the producer's home, because our relationship is not limited to providing government services: it means the historical construction of a relationship of trust and credibility. We sit together with the farmers, share coffee, share water, and together we create solutions and paths for sustainable development,” says José Gilmar Alves Júnior, the head of Emater's local office in Augusto Corrêa.

Farmer Gabriel da Costa, 28, confirms the importance of Emater's presence: “Wow, Emater being here in the Community makes things much easier. First because Emater brings information about rights that I, for example, was unaware of. These are benefits available for family farmers that we wouldn’t take advantage of if Emater wasn’t bringing the information, getting documents, and making all the connections,” he considers.

On Gabriel's three hectares, within the Corrêa Farm, a larger inherited property subdivided among relatives, Costa intends to expand the production of water flour and pig farming, with Emater's support. Currently, the total flour production per month reaches one ton, with sales in the municipality and exports to the capital Belém, via intermediaries.
