The State Secretariat for Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas) coordinated a technical visit to Combu Island, in the insular region of Belém, on Saturday (13), to present the results of the rainwater harvesting and utilization project being implemented in the community, called "Water For All".

The agenda brought together representatives from partner companies and extractive and quilombola communities from Barcarena, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, who were able to see firsthand how the initiative will ensure access to drinking water for schools, local businesses, and the island's health unit, using social technology and nature-based solutions (NbS).

During the visit, prosecutor Márcio Maués explained the purpose of the evaluation. "We had a resource that would initially be used for the expansion of the water network in urban areas. But with the entry of the concessionaire, these areas will already be served. We are evaluating the possibility of using these funds for initiatives that reach the islands, ensuring quality water for residents and local businesses," he informed.

Priorities - The Deputy Secretary for Environmental Management and Regularity, Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos, detailed the selection criteria. "Public facilities such as schools and health posts were prioritized, as well as collective enterprises of socio-biodiversity that generate income directly for the families on the island. This monitoring of water quality also helps strengthen the marketing of local products, such as andiroba, açaí, and Combu chocolate," he emphasized.

Teacher and resident of the Igarapé do Periquitaquara community, Gisele Trindade reinforced the importance of the technology for the residents. "Even though we are surrounded by water, we cannot consume it, and the cost of drinking water is very high for families. This project significantly contributes, helping our children and the entire community," she stated.

Scope - Currently, four schools, one health post, and four socio-biodiversity enterprises have already been covered with sustainable technology. Among the enterprises served are AME (Association of Extractive Women of Combu), Ygara Artesanal, and local açaí and chocolate production initiatives.

The visit also included representatives from Pluvi Intelligent Environmental Solutions, the Environmental Nucleus of the Federal University of Pará (Numa/UFPA), Hydro, and Alunorte, as well as community leaders from Barcarena, who learned about Combu's experiences as a reference for other territories.

"The visit to Combu reinforces Semas's role in articulating innovative solutions to provide access to quality water for riverside communities. This project shows that it is possible to unite technology, health and well-being, reduce inequalities, and strengthen local production," emphasized Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos.
