Spirited Away is the winner of the Oscar for Best Animation

The Ghibli Fest, promoted by the distributor Sato Company, arrives in Belém this Thursday (18) at 4 PM, at Cine Líbero Luxardo, located at the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP). With a total of 22 titles, the festival will be divided into two parts. The first part comes to theaters bringing 14 films that have marked generations, with deep, emotional, and visually enchanting stories. The selection promises to fascinate generations of fans and win over new audiences with poetic narratives and universal themes.

Among the titles selected for the first part of the showcase are works that defined the studio's identity and became global references in animation. “Spirited Away” (2001), winner of the Oscar for Best Animation and an international success, tells the journey of young Chihiro through a magical world filled with gods, spirits, and challenges that reflect personal growth. Directed by master Hayao Miyazaki, the film was recently selected as the 9th best film of the 21st century by the New York Times.

"Howl's Moving Castle" is a romantic fantasy

“My Neighbor Totoro” (1988) introduces sisters Satsuki and Mei and their friendship with the forest spirit Totoro, in a celebration of childhood and nature that has become a symbol of the studio.

“Howl's Moving Castle” (2004) immerses the audience in a romantic fantasy, where a cursed young woman finds refuge in the moving castle of an eccentric wizard, in a work that combines imagination and criticism of war. The program also includes “Ponyo: A Friendship That Came from the Sea” (2008), inspired by the tale of The Little Mermaid and mixing magic, childhood, and ecology, as well as “Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989), a delicate portrait of a young witch's coming of age in search of independence.

The adventurous “Porco Rosso: The Last Romantic Hero” (1992) takes the viewer to Italy between wars, where a cursed pilot with the appearance of a pig lives lyrical aerial adventures. Another acclaimed title is “The Wind Rises” (2013), inspired by the life of engineer Jiro Horikoshi, reflecting on dreams, love, and sacrifices amid a transforming Japan.

The studio's environmental concerns appear early on, as in “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” (1984), a visionary work that influenced the foundation of Ghibli and narrates a princess's struggle for harmony between humanity and nature. The young adult romance also finds space in “Whisper of the Heart” (1995), which follows student Shizuku in a story of coming of age and self-discovery.

“Pom Poko: The Great Raccoon War” (1994) brings an ecological satire, while “My Neighbors the Yamadas” (1999) entertains with its stylized drawing and humorous portrayal of Japanese family life.

With a more mature and intimate perspective, “Only Yesterday” (1991) alternates between present and past to reflect on childhood and adult choices. Originally produced for TV, “I Can Hear the Ocean” (1993) offers a realistic view of youth, friendship, and first loves. And closing the selection of the first part, “From Up on Poppy Hill” (2011) presents a romance set in 1960s Japan, where a group of students fights to preserve their school amid the social transformations of the post-war period.
