The program, in hybrid format, includes lectures, round tables, and working groups

The Pará Hemotherapy and Hematology Center Foundation (Hemopa) began this Thursday (25) the event "Future of PBM at Hemopa: Innovative Strategies for Sustainable Hemotherapy," gathering specialists, managers, and health professionals at the Osvaldo Bellarmino auditorium in Belém.

Organized by the Teaching and Research Center (Nepes) of the institution, the meeting, held in hybrid format until this Friday (26), aims to train multiprofessional teams on the principles and practices of Patient Blood Management (PBM), an evidence-based approach that optimizes blood use and improves clinical outcomes for patients. The program includes lectures, round tables, discussion groups, and working group activities to develop a guiding document that will guide the implementation of PBM at the blood center.

The event gathers specialists from various states in Belém

The event is aimed at hematologists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, intensivists, nurses, pharmacists, biomedical professionals, physiotherapists, nutritionists, hospital managers, academics, and researchers. Representatives from hospitals and blood centers in Pará, the North Region, and other states also participate.

Among the speakers are nationally recognized names, such as hematologist Dante Langhi Jr., professor at the Medical Sciences Faculty of Santa Casa de São Paulo, and Guilherme Rabello, coordinator of the PBM Program of the Brazilian Association of Hematology, Hemotherapy, and Cellular Therapy (ABHH) and the Ibero-American Society of PBM, as well as specialists from the Hemopa Foundation and other institutions, including Hemoce (Ceará), Hemoam (Amazonas), Ophir Loyola Hospital, and Gaspar Vianna Hospital Foundation.

Program - The first day was dedicated to conferences and debates on strategies for optimizing hemoglobin, regional experiences in implementing PBM, and the use of digital technologies in the field. There were also round tables on transfusion safety and quality of care, with the participation of professionals from Pará, Ceará, Pernambuco, and Amazonas.

The second day is reserved for an inter-institutional working group, where doctors and other specialists will divide into three thematic axes — optimization of hemoglobin, minimization of blood loss, and optimization of anemia tolerance — to propose practical guidelines for applying PBM in the routine of the Hemopa Foundation.

Paulo Bezerra, president of the Hemopa Foundation: prioritizing the rational use of blood in Pará

Strategic Importance - At the opening, the president of the Hemopa Foundation, Paulo Bezerra, highlighted that the event marks the second major meeting on the subject promoted by the institution. "Today we open an event of utmost importance for the institution. It is an innovative strategy for more sustainable hemotherapy, focusing on the rational use of blood in Pará. This system brings us even closer to patient care, ensuring safety and responsibility in each transfusion," he emphasized.

Iê Bentes Fernandes, hematologist at the Hospital de Clínicas: 'Implementing PBM is a hard but essential path'

Hematologist Iê Bentes Fernandes from the Hospital de Clínicas presented the local experience of implementing PBM since 2023. "Implementing PBM is a hard but essential path. Everyone wins: the patient, the hospital, the health teams, the blood bank, and society. It is an ethical movement, based on evidence, that reduces complications, improves the quality of care, and values the rational use of blood," she highlighted.

Larissa Francês: 'The blood bank cannot be just a dispenser'

Meanwhile, the technical director of the Hemopa Foundation, Larissa Francês, reinforced that the biggest challenge is to transform the culture of prescription. "The blood bank cannot be just a dispenser. It is necessary to train and guide teams that transfusion has a precise indication, which must be individualized and not based on old paradigms. PBM is precisely this path: disseminating knowledge and ensuring the patient a treatment that is increasingly safe and effective," she explained.

The technical advisor of Nepes (Teaching and Research Center), Eidy Ferreira, emphasized the role of the center in training and updating professionals. "Nepes has the mission of promoting continuing education and stimulating research within the Hemopa Foundation. This event consolidates this role by bringing together specialists from various areas to discuss and apply PBM in practice. We believe that with this movement, Hemopa takes a fundamental step to strengthen transfusion safety and establish itself as a reference in innovation in the North Region," she informed.

The expectation is that the outcome of the meeting will be consolidated into a strategic guide for the blood network of Pará, raising the standard of transfusion medicine, optimizing blood stocks, and ensuring greater quality and safety for patients.

Service: The program continues this Friday (26), from 9 am to 12 pm, at the Osvaldo Bellarmino auditorium, at the Hemopa headquarters in Belém. The activity will be an inter-institutional working group for the construction of the guiding document for the implementation of PBM.
