The need to value solidarity and the opportunity for a fresh start for thousands of people across the country is highlighted on this September 27, when National Organ Donation Day is celebrated. In Pará, the Hemotherapy and Hematology Center Foundation of Pará (Hemopa), based in Belém, plays a fundamental role in the National Transplant System (SNT), being a reference in technical and laboratory support for the procedures carried out in the State.

Hemopa also provides safe and quality support for transplants performed in the State

According to the president of the Hemopa Foundation, Paulo Bezerra, the date is a milestone to reinforce the role of the blood center and raise public awareness. “Today, we celebrate National Organ Donation Day. Hemopa is part of the National Transplant System and plays an essential role in this public policy. We are responsible for conducting compatibility tests between donors and recipients, identifying and selecting candidates, performing serological and immuno-hematological tests, as well as registering volunteers in Redome (National Bone Marrow Donor Registry) for bone marrow donation. We also provide safe and quality support for all transplants performed in Pará. On this day, we celebrate and join the Transplant Center, strengthening this great chain of solidarity in the State,” said Paulo Bezerra.

The manager also highlighted the importance of addressing the subject within families. “Dialogue among families is very important for understanding organ donation. Talking and expressing the desire to be a donor is a way to encourage and raise awareness about the importance of this beautiful gesture, which can save so many lives,” the manager added.

Data - According to the Ministry of Health, more than 78,000 people are waiting in the transplant queue in Brazil. Pará has been recording significant advances: in 2023 alone, 617 transplants were performed, including 519 corneas, 74 kidneys, 20 bone marrow, and four livers.

Between 2022 and 2024, the State recorded 1,512 procedures, representing a growth of 130% during the period. In the specific case of bone marrow, Hemopa recorded 2,317 volunteer registrations in 2023; 2,733 in 2024, and has already totaled 2,310 by August 2025.

With a structure recognized nationally, the Hemopa Foundation ensures the necessary support for each transplant to occur efficiently and safely, expanding life opportunities for countless patients.
