The Karate School of the Institute of Security Education of Pará (Ekiesp), linked to the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), held an internal kumite (fights) tournament this Saturday (27) as preparation for the Brazilian Karate Championship, which will take place in November this year, in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará.

The event held at the Iesp gym in Marituba, Metropolitan Region of Belém, gathered about 100 participants, including children and teenagers, who are part of the Iesp Karate school and a guest school, as well as the surrounding community and family members of the athletes. Among the participants, 48 athletes are part of Ekiesp, of which 38 were called up for the Pará karate team and will represent Pará in the 2025 Brazilian Championship.

The director of the Institute of Security of Pará (Iesp), Col. PM Walder Braga, presided over the opening of the event and reiterated the importance of the work carried out by the Karate School, which ensures encouragement for the sport and leisure of children and teenagers. “First of all, I want to thank each one present, congratulate all the athletes for their effort and dedication, as well as their families, who encourage and participate with us in this important initiative in the training of each athlete. Ekiesp assists not only the public security servers in training and practicing sports but also the children of the system's servers and the surrounding community. So, one of the main objectives is to continue with the mission of bringing society closer to the Public Security System, strengthening social actions, of which the Institute is also a part, in addition to the training and qualification of security agents,” said the Iesp director.

Created through a resolution in 2018 and in operation since January 2023, the School serves public security servers of the State, children of military personnel, and the surrounding community.

Sub-lieutenant of the PM and instructor of Ekiesp, Paulo Sérgio Nascimento, explained how the tournament was conducted and its importance for the athletes' preparation. “The Shiai-kumite (point fights) tournament was divided into categories by age and training time, with the aim of a final preparation, reinforcing the test for about 20 Ekiesp students, who make up the Pará karate team 2025, which will compete in the Brazilian Karate Championship in November, in the city of Fortaleza. So, this is another incentive and investment from the current management in the area of public security for the practice of sports and closeness to the entire community,” said Paulo Nascimento.

With daily operation and training, the athletes who are part of the school already have podium finishes in national karate competitions. In October 2024, six athletes from the School participated, through the Pará Philanthropic Karate Federation, in the Brazilian Karate Championship, which took place in Parauapebas, in the Southeast of Pará. They have already won one national championship, two vice-championships, and one third place during the competitions.

“Here at Iesp, we train daily. Some days focus on physical training, others on tactical training, and others on technical training, together with members of the Pará team who have been called up for the Brazilian team and come here on alternate days, and we do all the training aimed at competition. Here, we provide all the necessary training and support for our athletes to represent Pará by giving their best in the championships, like the one that will already take place in November, and of course, we count on the support of the entire community and those who want to contribute by assisting our athletes who need to travel to the capital of Ceará to compete,” added Sub-lieutenant Nascimento.
