Clowning activities are included in the action program to promote emotional support for hospitalized patients

The Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG), in Belém, is a reference in orthopedic trauma and also stands out in caring for the mental health of patients and companions. Throughout 2025, the unit has already carried out nearly 140 humanization actions, including haircuts, self-care, birthday celebrations at the bedside, extended visits, clowning, Cine Galileu, music therapy, art workshops, and projects like "What Matters to You".

"Galileu Hospital goes beyond medical assistance. We seek to offer experiences that bring lightness, joy, and emotional support during hospitalization. Humanized actions help reduce the impact of trauma and strengthen the self-esteem of patients and companions," highlights Anny Segóvia, coordinator of the Humanization Sector.

Among the patients who benefited from the initiatives is Carla Sarmento, 38, who underwent pin removal and plate placement after a car accident in the Marajó archipelago. "I think this type of action is great. Besides providing guidance, it makes the hospital environment more welcoming. It’s very nice to see people passing by and caring about us," she said.

Another example is Gilvani Palheta da Silva, who spent her 50th birthday hospitalized. When asked what she would like on that day, part of her wish was fulfilled: the HPEG team brought one of her daughters, Mariana Palheta, to celebrate the moment in the ward, moving both patients and professionals.

The humanization initiatives at Galileu have also been recognized by the National Accreditation Organization (ONA). This year, the unit achieved Level 3 – Accredited with Excellence, a recognition that evaluates safety, integrated management of processes, and excellence in administration, highlighting humanized projects as a differential.

Monthly, the hospital conducts activities through the Humanization Working Group (GTH), such as the Creative Crafts Project, which teaches manual techniques and encourages the creative economy, acting as therapy during hospitalization. "Manual resources improve patient progress. We focus on crafts, and now, specifically, on crochet techniques," explains Anny Segóvia.

Cine Galileu is also a success, bringing movie sessions to the wards with popcorn and juice, promoting socialization and relaxation. In 2022, during the World Cup, the project gained a thematic version, allowing patients and companions to watch Brazil's games in the hospital.

Another initiative is the "Letter to the Unknown" project, which encourages patients to write messages of optimism for other hospitalized individuals. Nurses, technicians, and psychologists collect the letters and deliver them randomly, promoting connection and support among the unit's users.

"What matters to you is always our priority. We seek to listen to each patient, meet their needs, and offer moments that bring joy and comfort during hospitalization," adds Cledes Silva, director of Galileu Hospital.

Profile

HPEG operates as a low and medium complexity unit, with 104 inpatient beds, serving as surgical support for orthopedic trauma patients. It offers Bone Reconstruction and Lengthening Services, as well as trachea and urological surgeries, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, renal exclusion, and prostate biopsy screening.

The unit is public and managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), and is located at Avenida Mário Covas, No. 2553, in Greater Belém.
