Seap and Sespa carry out over 450 health services in health action at the Santa Izabel III Unit
The initiative provided medical, nursing, and psychological evaluations to people deprived of liberty from September 26 to 28
The State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration (Seap), through the Biopsychosocial Assistance Directorate (DAB), in partnership with the State Secretariat for Public Health of Pará (Sespa), promoted a health action at the Custody and Reintegration Unit (UCR) of Santa Izabel III, in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. Held from September 26 to 28, the initiative resulted in 468 services to people deprived of liberty (PPLs).
The program included medical and psychiatric services, as well as nursing services such as blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, temperature checks, weight assessments, and rapid tests. The work was conducted by teams from Seap and the Prison Health Coordination of Sespa.
According to the director of Biopsychosocial Assistance at Seap, Michelle Holanda, the action reinforces the State's commitment to ensuring continuous care for PPLs.
“Our directorate guarantees health and social assistance to the detainees. We operate like a health clinic within the prison system, monitoring underlying diseases and referring to specialists when necessary. These actions are essential for early identification of problems that could evolve,” she emphasized.
According to Sespa, actions like this occur three to four times a year in the State's units, aiming to maintain adequate physical and emotional conditions, which contributes to order and balance in the prison environment.
Health policy in the prison system
The state coordinator of Comprehensive Care for PPLs at Sespa, Dione Cunha, explained that the initiative follows the guidelines of the National Policy for Comprehensive Health Care for People Deprived of Liberty.
“The national policy ensures the health of these individuals through the implementation of primary care teams in prison units. From this, it is possible to identify who needs specialists, chronic disease monitoring, or mental health support,” she detailed.
