The Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG), in Greater Belém, is a reference in orthopedic trauma and also stands out in specialized care for airway injuries, serving as a backup for patients referred from primary care centers in Belém and the countryside, a demand that represents 55% of the total public served in the specialty.

The Thoracic Surgery Service operates in critical situations, offering rapid and qualified care that can prevent serious complications and ensure better recovery. Dr. Roger Normando, coordinator of the Thoracic Surgery Service, explains the importance of the team's work.

"In all situations. From the minor injury, which if not looked at properly can become a major dilemma later, to complex cases, due to the nature of the injury," said Dr. Normando.

The service mainly addresses airway injuries, such as the larynx, trachea, and bronchi. "From the lower-risk ones to the more complex, such as lacerations, for example, caused by kite strings (cerol)," highlights the thoracic surgeon.

Agility in care is essential for prognosis: "Having a qualified team with appropriate materials, as well as a hospital with a designated entry point for these cases. In Belém, we have the Metropolitan Hospital, which represents well what I am talking about. Normally, Galileu is in a second stage to avoid sequelae or correct complications as early as possible," notes the specialist.

Multiprofessional action
The multiprofessional work is also essential. "The medical clinic team and intensivists, as well as nursing, physiotherapy, and speech therapists must be aligned," reinforces Normando.

The most common profile of patients is young and male. "They are young men with an average age of less than 30 years. They usually come from neighborhoods far from the city center," pointed out Normando.

According to the specialist, among the recent advances that assist surgeons, Normando highlights: "Several advances in trauma surgery, especially with video surgery in the treatment of later cases and improvement in surgical technique for earlier cases, with well-trained maneuvers."

Backup
HPEG consolidates itself as a reference in thoracic trauma restricted to airways, acting as a specialized backup after the initial care provided in urgent care centers. "We even created a classification of severities after the initial approach. We apply this method when patients arrive at Galileu. This classification is based on scores, and these scores determine the surgical conduct," concludes Normando.

PROFILE
The Galileu State Public Hospital is a unit of the Government of Pará, managed by the Social Institute Health and Amazon (ISSAA), a reference in orthopedic trauma and specialized care in high-complexity thoracic surgery, offering integrated and multiprofessional care.
