Environmental education actions at UsiPaz ensured training, sustainability-focused actions, and awareness

Between September 20 and October 3, the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate, and Sustainability (Semas), through the Environmental Education Coordination (Ceam), promoted awareness and environmental education practices in different regions of Pará. The actions took place at the Peace Plants (Usipaz) in the Jurunas/Condor and Cabanagem neighborhoods in Belém; in Icuí, in Ananindeua; as well as in Bragança and Benevides.

The program aimed to spread sustainable practices, train the population, and stimulate income generation through waste reuse, strengthening environmental education aligned with ecological principles, public planning policies, and the transformation of local reality.

The solid waste reuse course, led by Ceam, provided a practical and theoretical immersion on the importance of proper waste management. On September 29, the workshop held at Gabriel Lages School in the Tapanã neighborhood led to the production of eco-jewelry and reached about 200 people.

According to the Environmental Education coordinator at Semas, Andréia Monteiro, the activities reinforce the transformative role of environmental education in the daily lives of communities.
“The actions developed at the Peace Plants show that environmental education goes far beyond transmitting knowledge: it transforms realities. When the community learns to reuse waste, reduce impacts, and even generate income from sustainable practices, we are strengthening not only ecological awareness but also citizenship and social inclusion,” she emphasized.

Multipliers - At the same time, the environmental agents course was also conducted, focusing on the sustainable handling of natural resources. The goal was to enable participants to act as multipliers of environmental education in their communities, expanding the reach of actions in the future.

Student Lindiana, from Usipaz Jurunas/Condor, highlighted her satisfaction in being part of the initiative. “I am very happy to be gaining knowledge in this course. What makes an environmental agent happy is a planet that breathes, because the joy of those who protect nature is fuel for a greener future and the guarantee of happiness for all of us to live better,” she stated.

Resident Aldo Ribeiro, also from Usipaz Condor, reinforced the importance of raising awareness among the population for harmonious coexistence with the environment. “I am taking the agent course because I believe that humans need to learn to coexist with nature. We need it to create our habitats, our homes, and we forget that it is our survival. It takes time for nature to give us what we need. So, we need to take this necessity into account,” he pointed out.

The program also covered topics such as sustainability, circular economy, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demonstrating how simple practices can have positive impacts on commerce, income generation, and the quality of life in communities.

Business - Merchant Cláudio Antônio Gomes, a student from Usipaz Cabanagem, reported that the learning brings new perspectives for his business. “Among the topics covered, the one that caught my attention the most was the environment, specifically the socio-economic-environmental part. This is of great interest to me, as it addresses development while respecting both the economy and the environment. I wish to acquire knowledge in building and expanding a business so that we can observe the urban impact we can cause. I was very impressed with the State government's attitude to provide this in our place,” he highlighted.
