Setur wants to understand the profile of tourists and pilgrims to improve reception and tourism infrastructure actions

With the aim of better understanding the characteristics, needs, and motivations of visitors participating in the largest religious manifestation in Pará, the State Secretariat of Tourism (Setur) has initiated, through the Pará Tourism Observatory, a series of surveys during Círio de Nazaré 2025. This action is carried out in partnership with the Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese-PA) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).

Between October 8 and 12, teams will be at strategic points in Belém, applying questionnaires to tourists and pilgrims participating in the festivities. A total of 44 researchers will conduct 2,400 interviews in areas of high visitor concentration.

The Secretary of Tourism of Pará, Eduardo Costa, emphasizes that the information gathered is strategic for strengthening religious tourism in the State. “Círio de Nazaré is a cultural and spiritual heritage of the people of Pará, attracting thousands of visitors and significantly impacting the State's economy. Understanding the profile of these tourists and pilgrims allows us to better plan reception actions, infrastructure, and tourism promotion, as well as to value the faith and identity of our people.”

The survey “Profile of Círio Tourists” aims to collect data on the number of visitors from outside Pará, the states of origin of the people, average length of stay, spending during their stay in Belém, and the economic impact generated for the local economy. The study will also investigate the main types of accommodation used — such as hotels, inns, or friends' and relatives' houses — and the most visited tourist attractions in the capital of Pará.

On the other hand, the survey “Profile of Círio Pilgrims” focuses on devotees who arrive in Belém on foot from other municipalities. The survey seeks to understand aspects such as the starting point of the walks, the degree of religious involvement, the format of the pilgrimages (individual, group, or family), the motivation to participate, and the perception of the reception received along the way.

According to the coordinator of the Pará Tourism Observatory and Northern Region, Admilson Alcântara, the initiative involves extensive technical coordination. “On Wednesday (8), in the evening, starting at 6 PM, we will launch the survey with the teams from the Observatory and Dieese. There are 22 researchers for each survey, on the streets of Belém, and a total of 2,400 questionnaires will be applied, with the support of partners such as UFPA and Setur.”

“It will be an important job for us to deeply understand the profile of the pilgrims and tourists participating in Círio,” explained Admilson Alcântara, noting that the surveys have been conducted for 20 years and the partnership with Dieese also celebrates two decades of joint work this year.
