Detran reinforces signaling and road safety for pilgrims heading to Belém for the Círio de Nazaré

For the second consecutive year, the agency is installing signage with the message "Attention: Pilgrims' Route" along BR-316 and the Alça Viária, high-traffic roads used by thousands of faithful walking to Belém.

The Department of Transit of the State of Pará (Detran) has begun installing special signage along the roads connecting the municipality of Abaetetuba to the state capital. The action aims to ensure more safety for the pilgrims walking to Belém during the Círio de Nazaré period.

The interventions cover sections of the Alça Viária and BR-316, routes with heavy traffic of faithful and vehicles. "We are once again ensuring the safety of the pilgrims through specific signage from the urban center of Abaetetuba to BR-316. The reflective signage for the Pilgrims' Route aims to alert drivers about the promise-makers traveling on the highway," highlighted Detran's general director, Renata Coelho.

In total, 20 signs will be installed between the municipality of Abaetetuba and the section of BR-316 from km 18 to km 1, heading towards Belém. The signs follow the standards of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) and feature pictograms related to the Círio de Nazaré.

According to Detran's technical-operational director, Bento Gouveia, the initiative arose after an increase in the flow of pilgrims on state roads observed in recent years.

“The action aims to alert drivers about the presence of pilgrims, especially during the nighttime, when many pilgrims choose to walk. The signs draw attention to the increased care that drivers must take with these groups, who are on long journeys of faith and devotion,” Gouveia emphasized.

In addition to the signaling measures, Detran warns of a series of guidelines for pilgrims to prevent accidents during the journey. Among the main recommendations are wearing light-colored clothing and appropriate footwear, constant hydration, and avoiding nighttime walks. If it is necessary to walk at night, the agency recommends that pilgrims wear reflective vests and walk in a line, on the marked shoulder and against traffic.

Support vehicles must also follow specific guidelines, avoiding stops on isolated shoulders or on the opposite side of the road, prioritizing safe locations such as access to rural roads and property entrances.

With these actions, Detran seeks to ensure that the traditional pilgrimage to the Basilica Sanctuary of Nazaré occurs with more tranquility and safety for all participants.
