Suddenly, smoke spreads through the garden and soon the flames appear. Calls for help and chaos take over the environment as the fire advances. The fictional scenario simulates a reality from which no one is exempt and is part of the annual training for firefighters, conducted by the Regional Public Hospital of Transamazon (HRPT), in Altamira, southwestern Pará.

The course, which began on Monday, the 6th, with theoretical classes on protocols and techniques, ended this Thursday, October 9, and brought together employees from different sectors of the hospital, including Warehouse, Hygiene, Kitchen, Administration, Clinics, Laboratory, Reception, and Security.

Douglas Oliveira, a firefighting and first aid instructor responsible for this year's training, emphasizes: “The Regional Hospital is well supported and everyone can contribute to the constant improvement of safety.”

With another edition of the training, more than 120 employees will be qualified to act as hospital firefighters. For some, it is the first experience, and for others, it is the moment to enhance their techniques, as is the case with the Sustainability Coordinator of HRPT, Roberto Santana. “I have been a firefighter since 2018, and it is good to renew because it is a fundamental piece for the functioning of the employee safety system.”

For Eliana Costa, one of the longest-serving employees at HRPT, “knowledge is always good, and being able to save a victim in an extreme moment is rewarding. I am very happy,” celebrates the employee who, during the simulations, took on the roles of victim and rescuer, including a rescue amidst the fire.

The Fire Brigade is a group specialized in combat, evacuation, and rescue, mandatory in health units, and at the Transamazon Hospital, it follows strict protocols, in addition to a fixed schedule of courses. Safety and Occupational Medicine engineer, Romero Oliveira, emphasizes that it is up to the trained employees to act immediately in case of fire, for example. “This Brigade is the one that will be the first to combat any fire outbreak that may occur.”

“In a large hospital with a high volume of people, having a firefighting system, through hydrants and extinguishers, is important, and the purpose of this training is to guide people on how to behave in emergency situations, as well as how to act in case of incidents, during evacuations, mainly ensuring the safety of all users,” concludes instructor Douglas Oliveira.
