Director of Environmental Research and Studies at Fapespa, Luziane Cravo, emphasized the importance of the seminar as a space for articulation between science and public management.
The Amazon Foundation for Support of Studies and Research promoted, on the morning of this Friday (17), the Environmental Sustainability Seminar, conceived by the Directorate of Environmental Research and Studies (DIPEA) of the Foundation. The event brought together managers, researchers, and civil society at the auditorium of Fapespa's headquarters in Belém to present the latest studies developed by the Territorial Studies Coordination (CET) of the respective directorate of Fapespa.
During the seminar, the Sustainability Bulletin of Marajó Island and the Sustainability Panel of the Legal Amazon were presented to the public. The materials are part of the Sustainability Atlas project and contain detailed analyses of the environmental and social conditions of these territories.
The bulletin on Marajó Island was the main highlight, with its information on relief, land cover, land use and occupation, as well as population and territorial data, providing a scientific basis for the formulation of public policies and environmental conservation actions.
Marcel Botelho, president of the Foundation: "Public policies need to consider science and technology."
“These studies show some data about the impact we have from different human actions in the region. There are 17 municipalities in the integration region of Marajó Island, and when you provide data as we are offering here to the public authorities, it has a fantastic potential for information for decision-making,” said Marcel Botelho, president of Fapespa.
He added: "The decision, the public policy, needs to take into account science and technology, and that is what the State Government is doing through Fapespa.”
For Fapespa researcher Elias Klerington, the study will impact the knowledge of society itself and for future researchers to start their research. “It is an important research, (from it) I developed since my master's, and Fapespa is giving me the opportunity to continue this now in my doctorate, to integrate all this research apparatus, for the benefit of society and the State of Pará, to also bring this information to the islands,” he comments.
During the event, the Sustainability Panel of the Legal Amazon presented the results of the Sustainability Barometer, a methodology that measures the level of human and ecosystem well-being in the nine states that make up the region. The research includes, in this edition, the entire State of Maranhão, expanding the scope and allowing an integrated reading of the socio-environmental challenges and potentialities of the Amazon.
During the program, the director of Environmental Research and Studies at Fapespa, Luziane Cravo, emphasized the importance of the seminar as a space for articulation between science and public management. “The effort to hold this seminar and present these products to society and managers aims to provide information that can guide decisions in the municipalities,” she stated.
For the coordinator of Territorial Studies at Fapespa, Maiara Cordeiro, the initiative reaffirms Fapespa's role in producing knowledge applied to the Amazonian reality. “It is a concrete contribution to strengthen the integration between research, planning, and public policies in the region,” she added.
Sustainability Atlas
The Sustainability Atlas reaches its fifth edition with a trajectory of systematization and dissemination of strategic information about the territory of Pará. It was produced by a multidisciplinary team from CET/DIPEA, which has already mapped areas such as Cotijuba Island, Mosqueiro, Caratateua, Combu, Onças Islands, among others located around Belém.
Coordinator of Territorial Studies at Fapespa, Maiara Cordeiro, the initiative reaffirms Fapespa's role in producing knowledge applied to the Amazonian reality.
“These products are available on Fapespa's digital platform, with easy access for seminar participants, municipal managers, and also for those who will come to Belém. Thus, we offer reliable references for those who wish to better understand these regions, including with safety for conducting technical or tourist visits,” Luziane Cravo reinforced.
The studies are available on Fapespa's website, access here.
