Located in the Porto Futuro Complex in Belém, the Museum of the Amazons (MAZ) has established itself as one of the main cultural and leisure spots in the capital of Pará. In just 15 days of operation, more than 25 thousand people have already visited the space, which hosts two simultaneous exhibitions: "Amazon", by Sebastião Salgado, and "Ajurí", organized by the Institute of Development and Management (IDG) and the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.

The exhibitions combine photography, sound, and sensory experiences that present multiple perspectives on the Amazonian territory and have enchanted the public since the opening on October 4. "I was eager to go, and when I did, I left with the feeling that it was worth it. It’s an experience that our city deserves," commented student Renata Garcia, 20, who visited the museum last Sunday (19).

The space operates in Warehouse 4A, one of five restored and opened to the public in the Porto Futuro Complex, which also houses the Gastronomy Warehouse, the Amazon Bioeconomy and Innovation Park, and the Caixa Cultural. The complex is part of the set of structural works delivered by the government of Pará as a legacy of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), which will be held in Belém in November. Access to the museum is free, operating from Thursday to Tuesday, from 10 am to 6 pm.

Governor Helder Barbalho highlights the importance of the space as a cultural landmark and legacy of the Amazon. "The Museum of the Amazons is the materialization of Pará's protagonism. Here we show the world the strength of our people, the richness of our territory, and the state's commitment to sustainability and the future of the planet. This is a legacy that goes far beyond COP30, an invitation for everyone to know, value, and be inspired by the Amazon," he emphasizes.

For the State Secretary of Culture, Ursula Vidal, the expressive audience confirms society's interest in spaces that unite art, science, and reflection on the territory. "The Museum of the Amazons is a facility that symbolizes the protagonism of the Amazons. It embraces the knowledge of the forest peoples, values our cultural and scientific production, and projects to the world the creative intelligence that arises from this place," she states.

The largest exhibition ever held by Sebastião Salgado

The exhibition "Amazon", conceived by curator Lélia Wanick Salgado, is presented by the Ministry of Culture, Zurich Seguros, and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), with support from the Amazon Fund and production by Maré Produções. It is the largest exhibition ever held of Sebastião Salgado's work, with over 400 images, including suspended photographs, projections in immersive rooms, and portraits of indigenous communities.

The exhibition in Belém also fulfills a personal wish of the photographer, one of the most celebrated in Brazil and the world, who dreamed of presenting the series in the Amazon itself. Salgado had confirmed his presence at the inauguration but passed away before the opening. The setup then became a tribute to his journey and the work developed with Lélia Wanick and the Instituto Terra.

Permanently dedicated space for art, science, and education

With free access until February 2026, the Museum of the Amazons has received a diverse audience, consisting of residents of Belém, tourists, students, and researchers. The space offers a permanent program focused on art and environmental education, with curation that values traditional knowledge and scientific production from the region.

On October 16 and 17, the museum held the Climate Justice Forum, with the theme "Peripheries, forests, and futures of the Global South." The initiative, in partnership with the Museum of Favelas (SP), marked the beginning of the MAZ's debate and training activities, reaffirming the space as a hub for reflection on the role of the Amazons and the peoples of the Global South in the face of the climate crisis.
