The programming for Children's Month at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Unit (PSRM) in Belém was concluded on Friday (24), with another educational activity, involving children in a relaxed, playful, and interactive atmosphere, sharing information and guidance about the theme "Oral Health," addressed by the hospital in partnership with

the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), along with the young patients.

The initiative, promoted by Hospital Humanization over four consecutive Fridays, with the support of the multiprofessional team that makes up the Humanization Committee, was designed to combine play and learning, bringing joy and knowledge to the children of the Pediatric Admission Unit of PS, a state reference in clinical urgencies and emergencies for Belém and the metropolitan region.

Using playful resources and adapted language for better understanding by the children, the dentists from PSRM, Bernardino Ribeiro, and from the state Coordination of Oral Health of Sespa, Conceição Cruz, led the action and provided valuable information on the proper way to brush children's teeth, also guiding their mothers and caregivers about secondary infections that may arise during hospitalization due to lack of proper oral health care.

"Oral hygiene is essential for our life, a fundamental part, because, in fact, it is not just a cliché: health starts in the mouth. So, we need to multiply this knowledge, especially with children, so that future problems related to oral health are avoided. At the hospital level, this information shared during our approach can prevent secondary infections of oral origin during hospitalization, and we reinforced that," emphasizes Bernardino Ribeiro.

The dentist highlights that the knowledge assimilated by the children will be multiplied in their daily lives after hospital discharge, and can prevent future oral problems. "Children are our greatest multipliers of the knowledge they assimilate. They disseminate what they learn among their family and friends and, in addition, reinforce that everyone should do correctly what they teach about oral hygiene. We know that acting preventively avoids cavities, pain, gingivitis, periodontitis, among other situations that harm oral health, also preventing secondary and systemic problems, making children healthier," adds Ribeiro.

Patient Charles Moraes said he learned the technique taught and used it in his hospital routine

The use of playful resources was a strategy that caught the attention of the participants in the action. According to Sespa's dentist, Conceição Cruz, this methodology helps in the gentle fixation of information, allowing children to relax while learning.

"Playful activities help children assimilate information that they will carry for life. They will grow up and remember the little ball movement, the train, that we taught with this support. This is a way we have to make them assimilate and multiply at home and with their friends," reinforces the dentist, who highlighted the hospital's initiative to invest in education and prevention with the pediatric audience.

"This initiative from the hospital should be permanent in all hospitals, as it brings important information lightly to the child, who steps a little out of the routine generated by hospitalization, and to the mother who sometimes has doubts and can have an opportunity to clarify them. We do not only address brushing but also how to position children who are still babies, so that brushing is done in the best way, since each age has its specificity; we guide about the type of toothbrush, details that make a difference and impact oral health. Today we clarified a unique mother's doubt about her daughter's specificities. It is very important to inform children; what we hear in childhood, especially in a playful way, we always remember," assures the professional.

Charles Kenan de Carvalho Moraes, 13 years old, a resident of the Icuí-Guajará neighborhood in Ananindeua, participated in the dental brushing activities conducted by the dentists, with the help of members of the Humanization Commission, dressed as toothpaste, toothbrush, and dental floss. He shared his opinion about the educational event.

"I found the encouragement to brush teeth given to children very interesting. I thought it was really cool, and I have already used this technique after I learned it today. In practice, it worked; I used it here in my room. By looking and listening, paying close attention, I was able to learn," assures Charles.

Children's Month

On the first Friday of the month dedicated to children, the activities were conducted by professionals from the Humanization Commission itself, formed by hospital staff who work in the assistance and administrative areas. In addition to the programming with various games and playful activities promoted by the commission, there were activities from specific areas. Nutrition promoted a healthy snack, where children could create their own menu. The Sustainability Commission, in a relaxed and interactive way, involved children in the "Environmental Trail," with several phases where, at each step, children learned about ways to preserve the environment, led the third Friday of October, the month dedicated to children.

In the first four Fridays of this October month, the programming related to Children's Month at PSRM animated the hall of Wing C, near the Pediatric Admission Unit, with games, playful activities, and dynamics, information and guidance that, after their discharge, children will take home, which was the goal of the educational programming, as highlighted by the president of the Hospital Humanization Committee, Aristônico Rodrigues.

"Educational activities make learning more meaningful, promote critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, prevent situations that can be avoided from happening, such as in the case of problems involving oral health, the theme that concluded our programming related to Children's Month, and facilitate social development and integration with other children. Combining these factors with playful activities lightly and relaxed becomes fundamental, as it allows exploration, discovery, and the construction of knowledge in a light and fun way," emphasizes the president.

Service - The structure of PSRM reinforces the commitment to excellence in emergency and urgent care in Belém, the metropolitan region, districts, and neighborhoods surrounding Augusto Montenegro Avenue, where the health unit is located, offering 119 beds distributed among adult and pediatric emergency care, admissions, and ICUs, in addition to six surgical rooms equipped for medium and high complexity procedures, including minimally invasive ones, such as videolaparoscopies, which reduce recovery and hospitalization time.

Managed by the Acqua Institute, in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), PSRM has established itself as a symbol of the reconfiguration of public health in Pará, providing clinical urgencies and emergencies, operating 24 hours a day, attending to critical cases in specialties such as general surgery, vascular, pediatric, thoracic, bucomaxillofacial, and neurosurgery.
