Hemopa Foundation and Abelardo Santos Hospital Launch Blood Donation Campaign
The solidarity action reinforced the institutions' commitment to public health and mobilized over 300 volunteers in just two days of collection
The Hemotherapy and Hematology Center Foundation of Pará (Hemopa), in partnership with the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS), held a blood donation campaign on October 28 and 29 (Tuesday and Wednesday) among the professionals of the hospital unit located in Icoaraci, a district of Belém. The action, which had over 300 volunteers, reinforced the institutions' commitment to promoting health and encouraging voluntary blood donation.
The goal of the campaign was to strengthen the blood supply of the Regional Hospital and increase the number of donors in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. The mobilization involved the engagement of the staff and the technical support of the Hemopa team, which ensured all the necessary structure for safe and efficient collection.
According to Lorene Mota, social worker at the Donor Recruitment Management (Gecad) of the Hemopa Foundation, the campaign is part of the annual calendar of the Abelardo Santos Hospital and also the Solidarity Gincana among state institutions, promoted by the Foundation.
“The Abelardo Santos Hospital held another blood donation campaign, which is part of the institution's annual calendar, and aimed to raise awareness and mobilize staff, collaborators, and family members of patients about the importance and need for blood donation. In these two days of the campaign, we had over 300 volunteers and collected 267 bags,” she reported.
Donating costs nothing - Administrative assistant Fernanda Saron highlighted the importance of campaigns held in the workplace. “I have been a blood donor for some time because I understood how much this act saves lives. If we can help, why not donate? Having such an action at the workplace makes it much easier, as the rush of everyday life often prevents us from going to a blood center. I always say that donating a little of ourselves costs nothing and can give a new chance of life to up to four people,” she stated.
The nurse from the Transfusion Agency of HRAS, Edilson Cardoso Júnior, emphasized the direct impact of donations on hospital care. “Blood bags are essential for the Abelardo Santos Hospital, as they provide support to various patients, such as those in critical condition in Adult, Neonatal, and Pediatric ICUs, as well as those treated by Nephrology, dialysis patients, surgical patients, and maternal-infant care. Donations also ensure the performance of complex surgeries, as the hospital is a reference in various procedures,” he explained.
Among the donors, Luciana Costa, a resident of Icoaraci, took the opportunity to donate blood for the first time while accompanying a hospitalized family member. “My nephew is hospitalized here, and while I was waiting, I saw the movement of the campaign and decided to donate. I always wanted to, but I had never stopped to come. It’s very good to know that with such a simple gesture, we can help other people who are going through difficult times,” assured Luciana.
With 267 bags collected, the campaign has the potential to benefit up to 1,068 people, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and public engagement in donation actions.
The Hemopa Foundation conducts regular campaigns in partnership with public and private institutions, aiming to facilitate public access to voluntary donation and ensure the continuous supply of state hospitals. (Collaboration by Diego Monteiro - Ascom/HRAS).
