PSRM receives honorable mentions at the XVIII Healthy Hospitals Seminar for sustainability initiatives
Projects "Dialoguing about Sustainability" and "Orchard of Life" were the works presented at the event
The Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room (PSRM), in Belém, participated in the XVIII Healthy Hospitals Seminar 2025, which had the theme "Climate is Health, Health is Climate", held in São Paulo at the Syrian Lebanese Hospital this week, on the 28th, 29th, and this Thursday (30th). At the event, the state emergency room submitted two approved works - sustainability projects developed by the Sustainability Commission (CS) of PSRM, a state health unit, a reference in urgent and emergency clinical care for Belém and the metropolitan region - having received honorable mention for each of these works.
Presented projects - "Dialoguing about Sustainability" was one of the two works approved for the seminar and presented at the event. Through the environmental education initiative, members of the Sustainability Commission of the Emergency Room talk with patients, companions, and visitors about important topics for the preservation of the planet's health. Among the subjects addressed through mini-lectures, with patients and companions waiting for care
In the receptions of the Adult and Pediatric Emergency Rooms, topics related to the rational use of water and electricity, the importance of not polluting the environment, including channels, rivers, and igarapés, among others, are discussed, always correlating these themes to people's health, with the aim not only to raise awareness and educate about each individual's role, which involves changing habits that do not contribute to the health of the planet, but also intending that each person reached with the information can multiply it beyond the hospital walls, so that it reaches the community.
"We understand that we have this socio-environmental responsibility to the community. Therefore, we make a point of contributing by encouraging, informing, and promoting environmental education, as we know that our external audience is our greatest multiplier of environmental awareness outside the Emergency Room," highlighted the president of the Sustainability Commission of PSRM, Rayane Pereira.
"Orchard of Life," a project under development at PSRM since the beginning of this year, focuses on cultivating Amazonian fruit trees, starting with the planting of açaí and cocoa, but already with plans to expand planting to other native species. The project seeks to value local biodiversity, also addressing climate change issues, as trees are the largest contributors to thermal balance in the world. In the future, in addition to thermal comfort, the trees will provide patients and staff with fruits that will be used in the menu of the Nutrition and Dietetics Service of PSRM.
According to the president of the CS, who is also the manager responsible for the Sustainability Sector of PSRM, the two projects that received honorable mention represent an important milestone for the Emergency Room. "Talking about sustainability in a hospital seems unlikely, especially in a hospital where urgent and emergency care often overshadows many processes. However, we show every day that it is possible to bring improvements to processes within the hospital, including a sensitive look at sustainability. PSRM's participation in the seminar and the inclusion of the hospital in the Healthy Hospitals Project is a milestone that shows that, despite being at the beginning, we are already advancing towards the goal of making our health institution a hospital where the culture of sustainability is strong, consolidated, and impacts staff and the population," she emphasizes.
Rayane Pereira points out that "it is important to highlight that hospitals are not restricted to spaces dedicated to treating diseases. They can be healthy and sustainable environments. We demonstrate this daily through our actions and approaches, as we understand that caring for human health means, above all, caring for the health of the planet. The works presented at the seminar are ongoing projects in our Emergency Room that demonstrate this concern and aim for awareness and change of habits, as the health of the planet is associated with the health of all beings living in it," reinforces the environmental engineer.
The works presented at the seminar comprise a list of 5 projects, with the others being: "Roots of Health," "Green Friday: Creative and Sustainable Kitchen," and "Recycling is Caring for the Environment," which benefits families from the Solid Waste Collectors Cooperative of the Amazon (Coopcresam). Through this project, PSRM donated 8.4 tons of recyclable materials.
Healthy Hospitals Project - The Healthy Hospitals Seminar, which had its first edition in 2008, is an initiative for broad debate and development of knowledge about the sustainability aspects of the health sector of the Healthy Hospitals Project (PHS) - a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and mobilizing people and institutions for the sustainability of the health sector and public and environmental health, which represents and coordinates the activities of Health Care Without Harm and the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network in Brazil.
The PHS initiative is guided by technical-scientific knowledge, which brings together health professionals and organizations in a network to develop and foster cooperation, facilitate access to knowledge, and disseminate current and relevant information for the health sector's operation. Institutional members of PHS automatically receive membership in the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network and commit to the objectives of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda. The Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room is one of these members, having joined the organization at the beginning of this month of October.
"The mission of the Healthy Hospitals Project is to transform the health sector into an example for society in aspects of environmental protection and the health of workers, patients, and the general population. We are happy with PSRM's entry alongside other health units, with which it will promote efficient, fair, ethical, and responsible management of resources and operations in the health sector. We are committed to encouraging the use of cleaner and safer technologies through innovation in products and processes, disseminating reliable and timely information and actions promoted by our Sustainability Commission, in favor of environmental health, which directly impacts people's health," guarantees the general director of PSRM, Carlos Vinícius Ribeiro Quadros.
The Pará Women's Hospital (HMPA) and the Public Reference Hospital of Transamazônica (HRPT), managed by the Acqua Institute, in partnership with Sespa, also became part of the PHS this month, along with other hospitals in the country under the management of OSS, and presented their works at the Healthy Hospitals Seminar and also received honorable mentions for their participation in the event.
Managed by the Acqua Institute, in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), PSRM, located on Avenida Augusto Montenegro, Parque Guajará neighborhood, in the Bengui region, has established itself as a symbol of the reconfiguration of public health in Pará, providing clinical Urgent and Emergency care, operating 24 hours a day, attending critical cases in specialties such as general surgery, vascular, pediatric, thoracic, bucomaxillofacial, and neurosurgery, including minimally invasive procedures performed via videolaparoscopy.
