The Metropolitan Emergency Hospital (HMUE), in Ananindeua, which belongs to the Government of Pará, celebrated an important milestone: one year since the first scoliosis surgeries were performed at the unit.

Since October 2024, 58 corrective spinal surgeries have been performed, with 17 in the first year and 41 in 2025 alone, demonstrating the consolidation and advancement of this specialized care in the unit, in partnership with the State Health Department of Pará (Sespa).

Scoliosis surgeries are complex procedures that require a highly trained team and state-of-the-art hospital infrastructure. The treatment corrects spinal deformities that can compromise posture, respiratory function, and patient mobility, directly impacting their quality of life.

Dynamics - At the Metropolitan Hospital, patients scheduled for this procedure receive comprehensive care, from clinical evaluation and imaging tests to postoperative follow-up and rehabilitation.

The service is composed of a multidisciplinary team formed by orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, physiotherapists, nurses, and social workers, with support from the imaging diagnosis and physiotherapy areas.

“These results represent an important advancement for the public health system of Pará. The consolidation of this service demonstrates the Metropolitan Hospital's commitment to comprehensive and excellent care for patients, reinforcing the unit's role as a reference in high complexity,” highlighted the executive director of HMUE, Marcelo Azevedo.

100% free service - The surgeries are performed on patients referred by Sespa, coming from different regions of the State, many of whom have severe deformities that require specialized follow-up.

In addition to the direct impact on physical health, the procedure represents a profound change in the lives of patients. After correcting the curvature of the spine, many regain not only mobility but also self-confidence and the ability to resume daily and social activities.

Anna Carolina, 16, was the first patient to undergo the procedure at the unit and says she fulfilled a dream. “It was a dream come true. I had been waiting for this surgery for years, and the day after the procedure, I was already able to walk. Today I can say that I have returned to normal life and left behind a very difficult period,” reported the patient.

“Before, I suffered a lot from bullying and even gave up studying. Now it’s a new phase, pain-free and with self-esteem. The care at the Metropolitan Hospital was wonderful, from the doctors to the physiotherapists and nurses. Everyone treated me with great care, and I am very grateful for everything,” she recalls.

The advancement of scoliosis treatment at the Metropolitan Hospital is part of the ongoing investments by the Government of Pará, in partnership with the National Institute for Social and Human Development (INDSH), which manages the unit.

“Each patient treated symbolizes a transformed story. Seeing young people and adults resuming their life plans, going back to studying or working, is what motivates us daily to continue improving this service,” added Marcelo Azevedo.
