At COP 30, Cosanpa discusses sanitation as a strategy for climate issues
The Company's experience with engineering in Amazonian territories was presented during the event
The impacts of climate collapse on the provision of water production services, protection of water resources, sewage collection, and treatment. This was the central theme of the first participation of the Companhia de Saneamento do Pará (Cosanpa) at the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30), which began this Monday (10) in Belém.
The debate was held at the stand of the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of Pará (Crea-PA) with participation from civil and sanitary engineer Tatiana Costa from Cosanpa; Major Marcelo Pinheiro from the Operations Division of the State Civil Defense Coordination of Pará, and the president of CREA of Rio Grande do Sul, Nanci Walter, who spoke about the importance of engineering professionals in the reconstruction of cities in Rio Grande do Sul affected by rains and flooding in 2024.
Out of the 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul, 459 were affected by the event, which was marked as evidence of how climate change affects the ecosystem on a large scale and how coordinated action enables more effective responses. “Our professionals produced over 250 technical reports that were fundamental for federal, state, and municipal governments to make viable technical decisions for that moment and for the reconstruction of the cities,” said Nanci.
Also last year, another impact of climate change was the lack of rainfall in the Amazon River basin. According to an analysis by InfoAmazônia based on data from the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (Cemaden), the rainfall deficit was so significant that the main rivers of the Amazon basin reached their lowest historical levels.
“Last year, in light of the low rainfall index, we made a series of investments in river water capture systems to ensure the maintenance of supply, especially in the Lower Amazon region, where the impacts were greater. Now, with the sanitation concession and Cosanpa's efforts directed towards water production for Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba, we are starting to create a climate change adaptation plan aimed at protecting this water supply system,” explained Tatiana Costa.
In addition to this panel, Cosanpa will discuss sanitation in four more meetings during COP 30.
