Hospital Abelardo Santos combines art and care in workshops aimed at mothers of newborns
Workshops are conducted by artisan partners from the Icoaraci district and aim to transform the hospitalization period into a moment of lightness and welcome
The Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS), located in Icoaraci, a district of Belém, is holding another edition of the "Creative Corner" project this week, which offers craft workshops to mothers accompanying their newborns undergoing treatment at the unit. In this edition, the activities focused on making decorated piggy banks with Christmas trees made of fabric scraps.
In addition to providing moments of relaxation in the face of the challenges of hospital routine, the initiative encourages the development of new skills that can become a supplementary source of income. "It was a very cool experience where I could take care of myself, learn something different, distract myself, and maybe secure an income in the future," said freelancer Laila dos Santos Melo, 22 years old.
Maiara Gomes da Silva, 23 years old, who is also accompanying her newborn son at HRAS, expressed excitement about the initiative. "It's a moment to relieve the mind because we live in constant tension, especially when someone we love is hospitalized. Besides learning something new, I felt more confident to stay strong until my son is discharged," she reported.
The project is part of the programming of the traditional Craft Fair, which is held monthly on the hospital's boardwalk. The fair runs until Thursday (13), from 7 AM to 2 PM, and features handmade items produced by artisans from the region, such as decorative articles, embroidery, crochet, bracelets, and office products, among other items available for employees and users of Hospital Abelardo Santos.
Humanization
Artisan Darlene Campos, 48 years old, who leads the workshop, emphasized the importance of promoting solidarity economy and women's empowerment. "Our work is to give visibility to the products, but also to make a difference in the lives of these women who are often freelancers, housewives, and do not have a fixed income. These workshops represent an incentive and an opportunity," she highlighted.
According to administrative assistant and member of the Humanization Committee (CH) of HRAS, Leonardo Silva, the activity goes beyond artisanal learning. "These moments strengthen entrepreneurship and promote the exchange of knowledge. The artisans gain space to showcase their products, and our patients experience moments of relaxation and learning, which is rewarding," he explained.
The initiative reinforces Hospital Abelardo Santos' commitment to humanization in care. In 2024 alone, the unit conducted over one million appointments and promoted more than 120 actions aimed at the well-being of patients, families, employees, and surrounding communities. With 360 beds, the hospital is a reference in obstetrics and, in the last year, performed over five thousand deliveries.
