“When I get home, the first thing I will do is make a bean soup.” This statement is from retiree Marlene dos Santos, 73, when informed that she would be discharged this Thursday (13), after 90 days at the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS) in Belém. She was admitted to the unit to treat a thrombosis in her leg that progressed to pulmonary thromboembolism.

Hospitalized since August 24 at HRAS, Marlene was immediately taken to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she received daily monitoring from a multidisciplinary team. The elderly woman attributed her improvement to the care provided at the unit. “My treatment had the hand of God and a wonderful team of professionals who made sure I left here well and returned home,” she said.

Marlene's daughter, Glenda Coelho, 50, stated that the discharge represents a moment of relief for the entire family. “Our mother had a support network formed by me and my siblings, whom I want to mention: Anderson, Edlene, and Whecton. It was three months of waiting, and today God honored our prayers, placed Hospital Abelardo Santos in our path, and we will celebrate now,” she rejoiced.

The general director of HRAS, Aline Oliveira, highlighted the role of the unit for the population. “The example of Mrs. Marlene reflects our care pillars: to offer humanized and safe care, aiming for the patient's recovery. This is our commitment, led by qualified professionals and efficient management. And the one who benefits is the population,” she emphasized.

Better at Home

Located in the Icoaraci district, Hospital Abelardo Santos is the largest public health unit of the Pará government. In addition to ensuring the complete treatment of the patient, the unit provided an ambulance to take her to her residence and registered her in the Better at Home program of the Ministry of Health, which offers home care to people who need continuous care.

This support prevents prolonged hospitalizations and reinforces comfort and recovery in the family environment. “We were concerned to ensure that she left HRAS with the necessary structure to continue treatment at home, with specialized assistance. This makes a difference in her life and in the lives of those who care for her. The result was very positive,” emphasized the nursing coordinator of the ICUs, Izamara Guedes.

The professional added that this mode of care reduces the risk of hospital infections and other complications associated with long stays in health institutions. “Mrs. Marlene will be in good hands, safe, in the comfort of her home, receiving constant monitoring of her condition, with adjustments to treatment whenever necessary,” Izamara concluded.
