During an official agenda at the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), held in Belém, the Governor of Pará and President of the Legal Amazon Consortium, Helder Barbalho, reinforced, on Thursday (13), the protagonism of the Amazonian states in building a new economy based on forest conservation and the carbon market.

The statement was made during a symbolic act of support from the private sector to the jurisdictional carbon credit system (JREDD), held at the Pavilion of the Legal Amazon Consortium, in the Blue Zone of COP30. The event was attended by representatives from major national and international companies, who signed a manifesto in support of the initiative.

A new economy of standing forests

In his speech, Helder Barbalho emphasized that the Amazonian states are taking on a strategic role in the global climate agenda, not only as territory to be protected but as protagonists in generating large-scale sustainable solutions.

“We have been working to ensure economic strategies from the Living Forest. We strongly believe that transforming captured credit into a new commodity for the world is one of the main strategies to face the environmental crisis and achieve climate neutrality,” said the governor.

He also mentioned the recent signing of guarantees for the restoration concession operation with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) as an example of the Legal Amazon's commitment to structuring robust financial instruments and providing security to investors and buyers of jurisdictional credits.

Private sector adherence to JREDD

The symbolic act included the adherence of companies such as Banco do Brasil, Bayer, Bradesco, Dow, Itaú Unibanco, Itaúsa, Marfrig, Nestlé, Race to Belém, Silvânia, and Vale, which signed the declaration in support of the jurisdictional model led by the Amazonian states.

“It is a decisive step to connect and engage other companies and present the level of integrity of the jurisdictional system that subnational governments are implementing in their territories,” said Helder, thanking the signatory companies by name.

According to the governor, the proposal breaks with models based on donations or philanthropy and presents a high value-added product, with transparent governance and environmental integrity. “Here we are not discussing donation or philanthropy. We are presenting a real solution for emission neutralization targets. The jurisdictional system meets the demands of an increasingly sensitive and discerning market,” he highlighted.

Integration between public power and the productive sector

The Governor of Pará also reinforced the strategic role of the Legal Amazon Consortium in articulating between state governments and the private sector. “This public and private movement projects the Amazon as a solution. May we increasingly expand the portfolio of interested parties, valuing the Living Forest and sustainable development in the region,” he concluded.

The director of the company Silvânia, Natália Renteria, highlighted Pará's leadership in consolidating the JREDD mechanism. “Pará is a warrior state in the jurisdictional network. It has embraced this mechanism and has been working very importantly. Being here at a COP in Belém, emblematic, with Governor Helder, shedding light on this initiative from the companies, is very significant,” she said.
