Public security is increasingly working to defend the climate, and the Scientific Police of Pará (PCEPA) is one of the forces that make up this strategic segment of the environmental protection network. Through the Environmental Crimes Nucleus (NCA), linked to the Applied Engineering sector of the Criminalistics Institute (IC), criminal experts use their forensic knowledge to hold accountable those who commit crimes against nature.

Agents during operations that combat environmental aggression

Composed of 14 criminal experts from various fields of knowledge, the Nucleus provides technical reports that support investigations and police operations throughout the State. The sector receives various demands, such as expertise in cases of deforestation, wildfires, noise pollution, water pollution, emissions of waste and polluting residues, and animal abuse.

Operations - The sector also integrates task forces in larger operations, involving other police and environmental protection forces. Organized by the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas), the Operation Amazônia Viva was initiated in 2020 and is already in its 61st phase. The Curupira Operation is in its 70th phase, under the coordination of the State Public Security System (Sieds).

“The 'Amazônia Viva' is related to alerts, as actions are taken in the municipality according to the deforestation alert index for that specific month. The 'Curupira' has fixed bases in the municipalities of São Félix do Xingu, Uruará, and Novo Progresso, where we carry out continuous work, and we rotate teams every 15 days, without leaving the base uncovered,” informed the criminal expert and manager of the NCA, Enaldo Ferreira.

The most requested expertise includes verification of deforestation and wildfires, identification and measurement of illegal timber and mineral extraction, as well as analysis of weapons, vehicles, and equipment used in environmental crimes.

The NCA has criminal experts who are agronomists, foresters, chemists, and sanitary engineers, as well as veterinarians and geologists. "Our work is to materialize the evidence, preparing technical reports that support the investigations of the Civil Police," reinforced Enaldo Ferreira.

“Pará is hosting the largest climate event on the planet, COP30, and it is urgent to address environmental issues. Our Scientific Police integrates public security with a focus on sustainability, science, and commitment to the preservation of our Amazon territory,” said the general director of PCEPA, Celso Mascarenhas.
