Hemopa is expected to close 2025 with over 100,000 blood donations in Pará
On National Blood Donor Day, this Tuesday (25), the Foundation records a 10% growth in donations each month compared to 2024
For about 30 years, the freelancer José Gomes has been making regular blood donations to the Fundação Centro de Hemoterapia e Hematologia do Pará (Hemopa) because he considers the initiative a ‘true gesture of love’. “Donating blood is donating life, it is helping others and, in many cases, it means a new chance for someone in need in a hospital bed. In my family, three people have needed transfusions and were saved by donors. I invite everyone who can to perform this act of kindness,” he encourages.
In addition to strengthening actions to increase donor recruitment, Hemopa invests in decentralizing collection throughout Pará. The institution estimates that the year 2025 will end with over 100,000 donations, and on this National Blood Donor Day, celebrated on Tuesday (25), donors are honored with a special program.
“It is a great satisfaction to witness the growth in the number of donations of around 10% each month in 2025 compared to 2024. This shows how much the Government's work, through Hemopa, contributes to this mobilization and awareness of the solidarity of blood donation. Besides honoring the donors, on National Blood Donor Day, we seek new donors to perform this gesture, which, while simple, is so unique and capable of saving, in a single donation, four lives,” emphasizes Paulo Bezerra, president of Hemopa.
Hemopa is responsible for the transfusion system of the public network in Pará
The Hemopa Foundation is responsible for the transfusion system of the state public network, in the Unified Health System (Sus), and maintains internal and external campaigns, with educational actions, lectures, workshops, and partnerships that help strengthen the culture of voluntary donation. These initiatives also involve organizing caravans of donors in support of collections.
The biomedical Jean Lucas, 22 years old, took advantage of the proximity of the date to make his fourth blood donation. “I always look for ways to help people and donating blood is one of the most special and essential ways. Many people need blood bags every day and can be helped with a simple donation. Hemopa always welcomes donors very well, and we need to encourage new donors to perform this act as well. Donating blood is donating life; you will be part of the cure and life of another person,” he said.
The Hemopa Foundation promotes campaigns in the countryside to raise awareness about the act of donating blood. Last October, for example, Hemopa held its first donation campaign in Ourém, in northeastern Pará, exceeding the expected number of bags. This unprecedented action was organized in partnership with the city hall, Hemonucleus of Capanema, and the Regional Hemocenter of Castanhal.
COP 30 received a special campaign
In celebration of the COP 30 (30th World Conference on Climate Change), the campaign “At COP30, sustain life, donate blood” was held. The initiative was developed to further boost donation numbers, reinforcing the importance of permanent solidarity to ensure transfusion coverage throughout the state health network.
In Belém, the Collection Post at Pórtico Castanheira underwent expansion, with structural reinforcement and increased installed capacity, with the expectation of raising the number of donations by up to 20% in 2025. In Tucuruí, the new building of the Hemonucleus was delivered in July, completely modernized to strengthen transfusion care in the southeastern region of Pará. The unit serves seven municipalities in the region, with an average collection capacity of 250 to 300 bags per month and a more efficient flow for hospital emergencies.
